When I was at Parris Island, we had two recruits who did not abide by the rules during the hand grenade course.
The first one simply did not grab the grenade well and when he went to throw it, it hit the wall instead. It *did* manage to roll over the wall, but to the instructor it didn’t matter – I have never seen anyone move as fast as they did. He tackled the recruit and pulled a lead blanket over both of them with 2 seconds to spare.
The second recruit apparently wanted to see exactly how far he could chuck the damned thing so instead of throwing it and then ducking as instructed, I… I mean, ‘the recruit’ tried to look over the wall. Same thing happened. Hurt like hell.
I remember standing in line with my little fiber container of explosive death and looking through the armored window at how the front of the concrete grenade pits were all chewed to hell by fragments.
A few minutes later I realized the INSIDE of one was all chewed to hell too.
Instructors were very good, they said if anything bad happened to freeze and they would deal with it. Mine also had everyone tighten their chinstrap, as his plan was to pick us up by our helmets and throw us out of the pit if needed.
We had a recruit join our platoon at MCRD San Diego late in the program, about week 9ish as I recall (it was 35 years ago :). He was just out of hospital after botching his grenade toss. Killed the DI and messed him up quite a bit. Not as much as it would have if the DI hadn’t wrapped himself around the grenade.
