This case proves their laws are bad
Seems one councilman is asking for leniency for the Tennessee woman who mistakenly thought she was still in America and carried a gun in NYC. Says the councilman:
“By prosecuting this woman and seeking 3 1/2 years of jail, we are shooting our own [gun-control] efforts in the foot and giving the rest of the country ammunition,”
And:
Clearly, the laws are too strict here, but that’s something we need to work out for ourselves without honoring licenses to carry guns in states where felons can carry them
Interesting stuff on whether NY laws are up to date, I thought. And, perhaps, they fear a lawsuit. Via Jacob who notes:
What Bloomberg and Vance have created is the perfect martyr and posterchild for H.R. 822. Hopefully this case will help push it through the Senate.

What state allows felons to carry guns? (shrugs).

I think they have fucked themselves…

Sparky.. New york, california and illinois(cook county) allow felons to carry guns… Its the law abiding citizens that are not allowed…

Shouldn’t this open up the entire NYPD and prosecuting DA’s office to charges of denying civil rights? NYC is my home town, and I would be tickled pink if that happened.
Of course most of the Civil Rights Act that applied against Birmingham applies against NYC, but that’s a different discussion entirely.

states where felons can carry guns? that’s either no state, or all of them, depending on what you mean by “can”. either way, it’s a meaningless sound bite. (gee, who’d’a thunk the councilman could talk like a politician…?)

Just make sure your States Senators get a copy of this story with appropriate remarks regarding your position and request for support of HR 822 as passed!
This could be the straw that breaks the camels back! Use it. Middle age nursing student seeking job in big city, licensed in 27 States of US, asks for place to check weapon, is lied to by police, and then arrested!
I see a movie of the week here.

Article in the Tenneseean – sort of points out the stupidity

I don’t know. The D.A., Cyrus Vance JUNIOR (yes, his Daddy worked for Jimmy Carter) has his own Personal Crusade against all those “Evil KNIVES” people want to carry in their pocket, plus he’s beholding to Bloomburg, so I think he’s going to try and nail the Lady “as an example.”

I notice she was from The City, your city. I don’t know where she took her class but in my classes, I tell everyone which states do and which don’t allow TN permit holders to carry (I refer to the do not states as the DO NOT TRAVEL LIST). All students leave with a copy of the list as well.

Good point, Mike V. re: your DO NOT TRAVEL LIST:
I would NOT travel and visit a slave state like NY (or Illinois) unless I just unavoidably had to pass through.
People need to revisit the 1857 SCOTUS majority opinion which kept slavery legal in the U.S. Judge Taney stated, as a reason to keep slavery legal in the U.S., that if black people were declared persons under the Constitution, then they could keep AND CARRY weapons whererver they went according to the declared right in the 2nd Amendment.
Slavery is still in place in NYC and those who preside over it are criminals and tyrants.
