The solution to a bloated government program

Is another bloated government program:

Two New York lawmakers have called for a passenger advocate at airports to immediately act on complaints by passengers over security screenings.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and state Sen. Michael Gianaris of Queens want the Transportation Security Administration to create the position at all airports.

Wow. It boggles the mind.

Quote of the day

Ian says Youtube is freedom:

It’s been said that the US lost the war in Viet Nam in the living rooms of the US. 40 years ago it took major time, effort, and money to bring graphic images into the lives of ordinary americans. Today, all it takes is a cheap video camera and a Youtube account.

Restrain your dogs

Even police dogs. A 15 year old girl was attacked by a police dog during a police sponsored gun safety presentation.

The narrative

It doesn’t fit the narrative: Occupy Raleigh protester guns down domestic partner and wounds two bystanders before committing suicide; media covers up OWS association

Another name change

First, Blackwater. Then Xe. Now, ACADEMI. Ok, then.

Taurus PT Millennium fires when dropped?

A woman claims that she was shot when she dropped her gun and it fired:

Judy Price says the Taurus PT Millennium gun has a big glitch.

Now, she wants to spread her story to warn others and get the gun off the market.

She said the gun shot her when she accidentally dropped it, and she knows of five other similar instances.

On Nov. 24, 2009, Judy said the gun fell from its holster when she took off her sweatshirt.

I’m usually skeptical of such claims because so many like to blame gear for use error. I still advise letting dropped guns fall. Be interesting to know more about the other cases where this supposedly happened.

Why 4lbs?

Chris on trigger pull weight. Interesting read. I’m with Chris in that I don’t think a particular weight necessarily makes a gun safer, it’s more that the trigger is mechanically safe.

Help find a gun

Mentioned a bit back that two girls were shot and police were looking for the weapon. Well, they have their man they think but are still looking for the gun. Here’s the info and serial number on a Glock 22 the police are looking for.

Which polymer 9mm is best?

A look at some numbers.

But that can’t happen here

Until it does. Some day, people will miss where America used to be.

Or you could teach them real gun safety

Not sure what it is about NYPD cops and light triggers being blamed (Glock NY trigger for example) but they’re at it again:

The NYPD has instructed cops to stop carrying an off-duty gun that has a trigger so light it’s been blamed for a series of accidental discharges, the Daily News has learned.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says the Kahr K-9 semi-automatic pistol has led to more than a dozen such shootings — none resulting in a fatality. The shootings have occurred over the last few years, a source said.

Or you could teach them to keep their booger-hooks off the bang-switches.

Correlation and causation

Heh. Though the global warming one made me laugh.

Interesting article in Business Week on diversity:

Ultimately, she got the Walther, joining a confederacy of people who might once have been counted on in the main to be anti-handgun — women, liberals, gays, college kids.

Interestingly, the article is a bout a Buddhist who carries.

That new computer smell

The Mrs. got a new machine. I set out to decrapify the thing by getting rid of all the bloatware and useless stuff. I finally got to do something I’ve been meaning to try. With a stock install of an HP Pavilion DV7, I opened up Internet Exploder and grabbed CCleaner. I think this is the first time I’ve used Internet Exploder for something other than downloading Firefox in years. So, I run the cleaner and it finds a couple of pages worth of stuff to clear out. But when I do the registry cleaner, it finds 148 problems with the registry. Stock install, new out of the box and it needs that many registry corrections.

Desperation

Anti-civil rights Congress critters start petition to urge Obama to veto HR822, national reciprocity for carry permits. Does it mean they don’t have the votes in the Senate to stop it?

DC may budge on gun laws

The other biased Washington paper notes that a council member has proposed easing some of the most absurd hoops one must jump through to get a gun.

Well, it is called a ‘shootout’

Good thing it wasn’t a real gun. It may have gotten violent.

An improvement

Only 22 minutes to respond to active shooter this time.

Oh, Rick Perry, what has happened to you?

Android spyware

Mentioned it a bit back. But here’s more detail on it. Also, this is not a Google thing. It’s carrier specific. You can see if your phone is running the offending app by using this app. Mine is all clean, and I use Verizon.

Dammit, this makes me want to root my phone again.

Guns and cars

A friend of mine who used to drag race once told me a joke that went something like this (I may get the numbers wrong). What does a 500hp Mustang have in common with a 1,000hp Supra? They both do the 1/4 mile in 12.

What that means is that numbers don’t win races. For instance, here’s a sweet Hennessey Twin Turbo V1000 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. Look at the numbers: 1,000 bhp @ 6,400 rpm.

Nice! Right? Well, here’s a sweet Hennessey GTR. And look at the numbers: 813 bhp @ 6,500 rpm.

Looking at that, no contest right? CTS-V must rule the road? Except that the CTS-V does 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and the 1/4 Mile in 10.9. The GTR puts up a 0-60 of 2.6 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10.5. That doesn’t match the numbers!

It’s kinda like the 9mm v. 40S&W v. 45ACP v. SacredCow debates?

In a defensive gun use, stopping the threat, on average, requires you to fire 2.x times. Does it matter if it’s 2.1 or 2.4?

And, only related tangentially to car blogging, but the Infiniti Essence, a 592-hp gasoline/electric hybrid coupe looks sharp.

Leaving America

Don’t illegally take guns to Canada.

Kid Toys

A nerd website is all butthurt because kids like to play with toys. The FBI agent play set has handcuffs and a baton. I think they’re reading a bit too much into it. Newsflash: kids like toys. They like toy guns, but we don’t hand them real ones to play with without supervision. They like toy cars, and we don’t let them drive. They like battle monster type toys, and we don’t send them to cock fights. Lighten up, Francis.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
