New for SHOT
Some ARs. That is shocking!
Gun sales spiked again in 2011. The FBI released it’s preliminary crime reports and crime is down overall, even violent crime. Yeah, correlation and all, I know. But the anti-gunners would have us believe that guns cause crime so more guns would mean more crime, right?
Ron Paul leads in Iowa. I guess it’s his turn to be not-Romney.
Kim Jong Il is dead. Natural causes. I was hoping for lined up against the wall and shot in the neck. But, hey, it’s something. And his son might be even more batty.
The major announcement and initiative to stop gun violence: Light a candle. Are they in their death throes? I dunno but this seems pretty weak. Positive thinking doesn’t change the world and neither does feel good symbolism.
In this post on my diversified carry options, a few people commented and emailed me that I should carry one gun. Notably, this post that I’ve linked to before because it has some great advice. The trouble with that is that not all of us are pistol instructors. I don’t get up every day, throw on my tactical pants and shoot me first vest and head out to earn a living. I work in, mostly, professional environments that actually have some semblance of dress requirements that preclude me from going heeled in some cases or limit my options in others.
I’d love to get up every day, toss on my over-sized belt and load it up with a full-sized M&P, two extra magazines, a knife, flashlight, a multi-tool, last ditch knife, some Fox OC, climb on board my pet rhino, and go about my day knowing I had all my bases covered when it came to self defense. But it doesn’t work that way.
A button down shirt and khakis or a polo shirt and pants aren’t very tactical. And aren’t conducive to the use one gun plan. Don’t get me wrong, using one gun is a great plan and, if you can, do it. But for some of us, it doesn’t work. Pocket carry sucks but a gun is better than none, so I go with what fits depending on circumstances.
YMMV.
Been talking about it for a while, but I’ve now been pocket carrying a 9 for about three weeks. I’ve been carrying a Kahr PM9 on loan from Oleg, who was nice enough to let me try it out. For holsters, I’ve been going back and forth between a Galco Pocket Protector and the Dragon Leatherworks Wyvern. I have a Sig P290 coming as well to give a test whirl. Some thoughts:
Much heavier than the Kel-Tec. Not a major issue but after a long day, you notice it’s there unlike the Kel-Tec. And, unlike the Kel-Tec, you’ll find you need a belt since the extra weight tugs your pants down a little.
You need bigger pockets. Some styles of jeans and pants have smaller pockets and, while you can shoe-horn the carry rig in there, I don’t think it’d be very ideal to attempt a draw under real world stress. In the safety of my basement, I practiced some and it took some work to get consistent. I’ve had no issues with larger pockets, tactical pants, or cargo style pockets. This seems to be mostly an issue with jeans.
Printing is an issue. Both holsters show a bit of a print. Your average person wouldn’t notice but a gun guy would.
Not sure that it will end up being an everyday option but it will definitely be in the rotation.
An account of the Tea Party leader and his gun charge in NY. If he was traveling, then this could be protected under the FOPA. However, there are conflicting reports.
Farhad Manjoo on kids and the Nerf arsenal. Nerf has a lot of cool things out. And, yes, you’ll have to man up and be a parent. But those things are cool.
Meanwhile, illegal Nerf hack. Heh.
I remember hearing the tales of how, right before his first presidential bid, he ran right out and got himself a life membership to the NRA. But he’s never seen gun control he didn’t like. We could hold out, I guess, since he’s had a change of heart on all kinds of other issues, right?
Via Les, we learn that it loses $11 per year but makes up for it in sales. I’m a fan of amazon prime. For $79 per year, I get free two day shipping, some free video from Amazon movies, and discounted overnight shipping. It paid for itself when I ordered the 100+ pound Primo grill, which I love.
congress did something not entirely wrong. There was no repeal of the law limiting choice. Just funding cuts.
Jay has a new pocket holster from Dragon Leatherworks, the Wyvern. I recently started using one, though mine is not quite as fancy. You can see it here with the Kahr PM9 stuck in it. It’s a nice holster, durable and well built. My only issue with it is it’s too damn pretty to be a pocket holster.
A note on gun-writing. Yup. That’s probably why I write about non-gun stuff as well. Besides, this year’s new hotness is pocket 9mms. I don’t think he got the memo.
Someone did it. The only thing I know of that the Judge has been practical for is a friend of mine who hunts rabbits with his.
Jeff Knox: I am the gun lobby. He says they should get it right. They won’t. Telling it wrong gins up the appropriate controversy.
Kerrin’s Top Ten Stocking Stuffers
Glenn recommends concealed carry holsters and CrimsonTrace lasers.
I’d recommend tactical flashlights. They’re even appreciated by non-gunnies.
Gunwalker part, what, 4 or so? Gunwalking in Houston.
Leads to gun control debate? Why doesn’t it lead to an ATF control debate? Looks like it worked as planned, to gin up gun control.
Ordered two small trigger parts. Look at all that packaging.
Yesterday was a record in terms of items sold through amazon. About 60 of you bought the deal on hearing protection. The price has since dropped but the $15 off at check out is gone. Also, about 20 of you bought the S&W Tactical Pen.
And one of you actually bought this book. I’m laughing.
And ten of you bought The Delegate.
This stuff just interests me.
When you shop at Amazon from here, I make a little money. And thanks!
Boy disciplined after waving around a gun-shaped piece of pizza. What is wrong with school administrators?
Anonymous donors pay off Kmart layaway accounts:
At Kmart stores across the country, Santa seems to be getting some help: Anonymous donors are paying off strangers’ layaway accounts, buying the Christmas gifts other families couldn’t afford, especially toys and children’s clothes set aside by impoverished parents.
Hats off to you, Lady.
Apparently, the candidates in that debate no one watched were asked about it.
Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
