At some point there was someone working on a very heavy (long) 5.56 for subsonic performance. It looked not unlike that long bullet. I think they ran into trouble stabilizing such a long bullet.
I really like my blackout, but would like it better if they could get better performance out of the “hot” variety. 7.62X39 performance isn’t bad, but something closer to 6.8SPC would be really nice.
HL – Stupid question, what does the Blackout do that 6.8SPC doesn’t? What does 6.8 SPC do that Blackout doesn’t?
I shoot a bit, reload, and have a basic understanding of the differences between calibers and ballistics. But with the boom of new rounds for the AR-15 platform, it feels like many of the variants are being made to sell uppers, mags, and ammo rather than to meet a need.
The blackout allows delivery of a 220Gr 30 Cal bullet at subsonic velocities whilst requiring ONLY a barrel change to your AR. You can also cram 30 of them in a standard AR mag.
6.8 requires bolt change and barrel, and I don’t think there are any subsonic factory loads with it if I am not mistaken. And you can only get 23 of them in a mag I think.
Like I said before, if they can work out a really heavy bullet for it that works well, it could be a winner too. The great thing about 30 cal is the huge selection of bullets.
At full power, I think the 6.8 is much better than 300BLK, but right now, I think the 300 is a better Subsonic choice.
Another great thing about it is it works very well with a 9mm Suppressor. 6.8 may too, but the smaller the bullet gets the more overbored an existing supressor is going to be.
Venery, the art of naming groups of things: an exaltation of larks, a scruff of occupiers. And now, Freiheits’ “the boom of new rounds.” The shock of each moment of being alive. Boom.
What a beautiful language. Like a road trip with Geoff Chaucer. Bifel that in that seasoun, on a day…
Geez, I haven’t seen a pencil bullet like that since I pulled apart a bunch of milsurp 6.5×55 rounds from the 1930’s. A sectional density like that could divide by zero!
“You’ll change your mind when you know what it is. ”
No, I really won’t. It looks like a 6.8 necked to 30. But I would be just as uninterested if it were a 6.5 necked to 338, a 308 cut down to x40, a Chinese 5.8 necked to etc etc etc etc I don’t care.
Unless its a NATO case modified to accept a NATO bullet… Say something like a 223 case modified to take a 308 bullet, holds 30 rounds in an unmodified magazine, uses the same pressure/gas system settings whether super and subsonic loads are used, has all but one part commonality with any AR out there, and has 30+ companies making ammo, barrels, guns for then… Nope. Not interested.
The wildcat game is very well summerized by lookinawing over 20 years or 300 Whisper vs 1 year of 300blk. IMO, it’s over when you look at what the combo of 556, 6.5, and 300blk gets you. But good luck.

subsonic thumpy goodness?

Looks like the 450 grain variant 🙂

That’s SOME Powder in that case.

Yawn, why did I click on this instead of working another 30-ish vanity calib…HOLY SHIT! I hope they call it “Rods of God”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_bombardment

Maybe this is it.

Nothing wrong with that of course. 😀

+1 Freiheit.
Even if there is no “need”, they will convince you that you really need it anyway. 🙂

Nice. A shiny new “cool” cartridge. I wonder how long the fad will last?
January 9th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
If that’s .338 Spectre, it has one more feature — you can shoot it through a 9mm pistol suppressor and it stays very quiet.
January 9th, 2012 at 3:42 pm
Don’t think it is 338 Spectre…the bottle neck is much lower on the case IIRC.

I vote Magic Brownies
January 9th, 2012 at 10:54 pm
I’ll take a guess… 6.8 SPC necked up to 30 Cal. 30 Herret Rimless Tactical (30 HRT) or a similar wildcat.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:48 pm
Huh? A 300 grain bullet from a .308?
January 9th, 2012 at 11:57 pm
You sure cant put much of a powder charge behind that long ass thing.
January 10th, 2012 at 6:25 am
Compressed powder charge?
January 10th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
I’ll add this to the list of calibers that make no sense considering the massive support behind 300blk.
January 10th, 2012 at 4:09 pm
Nope.
You’ll change your mind when you know what it is. 🙂
January 10th, 2012 at 8:36 pm
A new day, a new guess… 6.8 SPC necked up to 7mm maybe?
