KA-BAR TDI Last Ditch Knife: Initial Thoughts

I snagged the Last Ditch Knife from Amazon, it’s only $12:

Ooh, pointy!

It’s purpose is to be a weapon of last resort. It’s small, light and one of the sharpest out of the box knives I’ve handled. It’s a good knife to have for retention of a handgun as you can easily keep this knife on your weak side and grab it with your weak hand. The Pros:

  • It’s very small and light. You can literally keep in you wallet, the watch pocket on your pants, in your boot strings, or wear it as a necklace. Or keep it inside your belt.
  • Sharp and very pointy.
  • The design just says “stabby”. Designed to be a down stroke slashing and stabbing weapon, and it looks mean.
  • A few cons:

  • While it comes with a sheath and a neck lanyard, there is no clip to securely attach it to the inside of the belt or pants. So far, it rides inside the belt just fine and comes out of the sheath just fine. I’d rather it had a clip or a hooked edge to more securely attach it to a belt.
  • The blade is small, which may limit it’s use as a stabbing weapon, where penetration is key. However, it is damn sharp. So a down stroke slash would be enough to get someone to let go.
  • While it’s thinness makes it easy to carry and conceal, I imagine the blade wouldn’t stand up to much prying or use as a tool. Of course, it’s not made for that.

      I’m thinking that the clip issue should be rather easy to solve. Surely you have a donor knife or a Paki made hardware store knife with a clip that could be added to the sheath? How hard can that be?

      There’s an accessory clip that K-Bar sells that fits the Last Ditch and a few of their other knives. I think you have to screw it to the holes, but it comes with the hardware. Check their catalog.

    3. SayUncle Says:

      I could do that, Paul. Thanks.

    4. Calm Gun Says:

      I like the clip idea from PaulP. I’m going to add one this weekend.

    5. Jerry Says:

      Hey, it’s dissapearin’ dude in the post above!

    6. HL Says:

      A friend of mine has one. I think it is pretty nifty.

      In https://www.saysuncle.com/wp-content/themes/SayUncle/style.css add:
      .entrytext {
      list-style-position: inside;
      }
      This will fix the issue with the bullets sitting outside the center column.

      I wear mine around my neck everyday.

    9. SayUncle Says:

      D2K, tried that. Look any better?

    10. Weer'd Beard Says:

      I carry one of the larger TDIs and while the blade is a bit short for good penetration, note that it is perfect for cutting muscle and tendons off arms that are grabbing or holding.

      Also being as small as they are, many places don’t consider them a “Weapon” under their knife laws.

    11. aczarnowski Says:

      I have and like the slightly bigger brother as well. The knives themselves fill their specific niche perfectly.

      The sheath and clip, on the other hand, are awful. And the intertubes fail me every time I go looking for replacements that complement, instead of ruin, the overall package.

    12. D2k Says:

      SayUncle, looks good.

    13. D2k Says:

      Actually it appears that it didn’t fix it on the front page.
      Looking at it again apparently the class changes between the two, but they have a common parent.
      So you can fix it by changing from:
      .entrytext
      to
      .post

      Sorry about that I didn’t look at it deeply enough the first time.

    14. Rivrdog Says:

      Disagree on the retention use. If you split your attention by trying to retain and also to drawing a knife and cutting, you probably won’t retain. In retention (and this is why you need to wear a good IWB or OWB BELT SLIDE holster, not a clip-on), your reaction is to grab the grabber’s wrist and push down. You can usually muster 3X the push-down force as he can the pull-up force. If you’ve grabbed the wrist properly, you can use your grip on it to paralyze his tendons, and you will prevail, then you tear away from him, step two steps back, draw and fire. Remember, a gun-grabber is NOT a thief, he is attempting to KILL you. Lethal force is ALWAYS appropriate against a gun grabber.

      If you want to drill, get a “red gun” mock-up and drill with a buddy. Exercises include side, leaning one-hand push-ups on that side and grip-strength exercises. Both of those will help your shooting, anyway.

    16. Cybrludite Says:

      I used the paracord that came with it to make beltloops for mine. A square knot at the bottom side hole, loop up through the top hole on the same side, over to the opposite side, and back down. Finish with another square knot on the bottom & seal the cut end of the paracord with a lighter.

    17. Ted N Says:

      I’ve got a CRKT Minimalist, pretty much the same thing, wear it as a neck knife, really like it.

      Thanks for the 550 cord idea, cyprludite.

    18. Gracie Says:

      I really like this knife! Thank you for bringing it to our attention…and for only $12 it’s hard to say no to.

    Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
