Barriers to entry
In Knoxville, a recycling company must stop accepting old shingles. Seems the piles are growing and no recycling has occurred.
This is actually something I recently learned about. A client of mine does roofing. As a result, he has lots of old shingles to dispose. Asphalt companies like to use old shingles in their product. So we thought we’ll recycle them. Turns out, no place local really wanted to take them. And then we thought we’ll set up our own place to collect old shingles and sell the scrap to asphalt companies. Well, it turns out there’s a state law that makes recycling them locally a major pain and transporting them out of state makes the operation unprofitable. I’m guessing that’s what’s happening here aside from the lack of a solid waste permit.

It’s what government does.

we use to throw them, a shovel-full at a time after dark, into a bonfire.
The only other option was to slip a few into every weekly trashbag or take them in your personal car to the dump.
If you took them to the dump in a pick-up, they would accuse you of being in the illegal roofer bizness

I bet that its “Environmental Law” that’s demanding we not recycle any of those shingles.

There’s a place not far from me that does this. They bring in a huge shredding machine from time to time that pulverizes the shingles and it’s hauled away in dump trucks.
The mountains haven’t gone down lately, though. I wonder if they’re having similar problems.
