I wish curious what an FR8 rifle sold for these days, so I Googled: fr8 rifle.
And was immediately distracted by the Google images result.
Dammit, Oleg.

I was in the gun store the other day, and I must say, I’m amazed at how GOOD the quality of economy commecial bolt actions have become, just since I was in High School in the late 90’s (Class of 2001). Back then, milsurps were my only option for the coming war with the UN Small Arms Confiscation Taskforce (which never happened in large part due to the election of GW Bush), with the SKS being the cream of the crop, because it was an affordable semi-auto.
That has all changed. Now, the only affordable milsurp bolt gun is the Mosin-Nagant, which I passed on when they could be had for $65. I luckily found a surplus FN Mauser in .30-06 for $90. Today, I don’t see any milsurps that are worth having that don’t go for $350+, and for that much, you can get a brand new Savage Axis with a detachable mag and a scope in a mainstream caliber. There’s also the Ruger American Rifles and others in this field, finally beating milsurps in price and performance.
I never liked scopes, but open sights tend to cost more. Savage just announced the Hog Hunter which will likely have a street price of around $400, with open sights, a threaded barrel, and an accu-trigger. Lee Enfields regularly go for that much these days. I’ve never been wealthy enough to afford a M1903 Springfield, and I seriously can’t imagine how long ago it was that they were affordable.
You have got to be kidding me. yet another ding a ling who knows nothing passing himself off as someone who knows recommending outdated military rifles for “survival” use as if we will need military rifles to fend off the russian hordes and it must be military ready. Just stupid. There is just so much BS out there about “training” and “survival” it’s not funny.
An ’03 Springfield as a survival rifle?? WTF? Why not something from the Boxer Rebellion, like a Krag for chrissakes, or a 1909 6mm Lee-Navy? Where’s the Nepalese Martini-Henrys?!? Sheesh.
I dunno, I kind of like having something that takes a current issue military/surplus caliber; an Ishi in 7.62×51. I’ve even managed to finagle a scope mount, but it remains to be seen how well it holds zero. The irons are open, anyway.
Oleg has an enviable career, hehe if you enjoy what you do, it isn’t work.
Mr. Evilwrench; Actualy, an 03Sprinfield or 98Mauser are perfect for prepping. Yes, there are many more modern, more accurate rifles our there. However, parts are both available and relatively cheap. Many current wonderguns only ship parts to gunsmiths, or you have to order the whole action. And lets not forget that more modern types are not legal everywhere. And the last thing you want to do is run afoul of the authorities. These old BA Milspec rifles were made to last several lifetimes, and do so.
Gary Foster; No one is advocating using outdated WW2 hardware. These old rifles are, as stated earlier, made to last. I’ve seen Yugoslav 98k’s for about $200, and GI .308win bbls for $50. Add a Ramline stock and your good to go. And don’t dis the 8×57 Mauser. And if your lucky enough to have a No4/5 Enfield, you could do worse. No, they won’t drive tacs like a Rem700. But they do the job and are RUGGED. And you can still get parts cheap. And you wont have to ship it to the factory if it does break.
