So that no one will recognize him as an idiot, perhaps? KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU’RE SHOOTING! (And Maintenance/Repair/Modifying while Gun Smithing of course).
I’m with Les on this one (us bubbleheads gotta stick together). Not putting the finger on the trigger is CRITICAL.
I’m a music teacher, and I always reinforce this point with my students. Every time you pick up your instrument (or weapon), you are forming habit patterns. Kinetic memory is a wonderful thing, if your muscles remember the right stuff.
Putting your finger on the trigger of a firearm should set off an alarm unless all the other factors are present rendering your action safe. It should be psychologically difficult, if not impossible, to finger the trigger unless there’s a valid target in your sights.

I presume for the same reason he’s hung a cheap POS Chinese scope on his rifle: It was cheap.

In the military we often trained with gas mask, even had to use at the range because of the difficulty of shooting with one on.
