If I had a dollar for everytime a woman has asked me “is that an M2 .50 caliber machine gun in your pants or are you just happy to see me?” I would be rich.
Seriously though, I love 1911s. But it is not an ideal concealed carry choice.
Being 6’3″, I never thought about that. My biggest concern has always been hitting my head on stuff, like ceiling fans; Dear gawd, people! I carry a 1911 compact because it’s flat. I have several guns that are made too bulky by virtue of the grips that come on them. The Sig 232 is much bulkier than a 1911 because of this.
I have long noticed that the Glock 17L and Glock 24 (6″ models both) have the same overall length as a 4″ S&W revolver. The length of draw almost certainly has a great deal to do with selection.
My carry is a Springfield MicroCompact in stainless steel, toted in a Don Hume IWB clip-on. I’m 5’6″, and tubby, but have no problem carrying like that.
When I’m going to be in a car for a long time, it goes into a Galco Miami Classic horizontal shoulder-thingy. I ridicule myself for carrying in it, but it’s amazingly comfortable for long periods of time.
I’ve tried carrying a full-length 5″ Gov’t, but I’ve got to agree that the barrel/slide is just too darned long for me to comfortably keep on my hip. The shorter-barreled 3″ 1911 is just fine, though.

That’s why my carry 1911 is a Lightweight commander and in a horizontal shoulder rig.

I don’t carry a 1911 because, well, it’s none of your $%^&* buisimess. Now, is it?
