What government does
So, the .gov decided there would be a $10M prize for anyone who could come up with a green light bulb. Somebody won the prize with a bulb that costs $50. Facepalm.

I love all the commenters talking about how the $50 bulbs are better because of how much you save on electricity and replacement costs over X years compared to a $1 incandescent bulb (or a $5 CFL).
Yes, the savings are correct. But long term savings don’t matter to the poor person who simply doesn’t have the $50 to spend on a light bulb. All of the “it’s for your own good” types seem to keep forgetting that little detail.

Don’t worry. The Gooberment will just give out “Discount Coupons” like they did with the “Free” Convertor Boxes for the TeeWee a few years ago.
And they’ll be $10 LESS than is need to purchase a bulb, also.

IIRC Philips was the only entrant to that contest, and “won” for that reason despite not actually meeting all the criteria (it was supposed to hit a price point under $25).
I just look at it as early adopter pricing anyway. Slightly less efficient LED bulbs can easily be had for less than $15 now — and much of that cost is due to the legacy “bulb” form factor.

I tried CFL bulbs. The bulbs used 7 watts and replaced 60 watt bulbs. At 10 cents per kW/H, the bulbs would have to last almost 4 years longer than an incandescent.
Of the 20 that I bought, 4 of them burned out in less than a year.

And this is what is wrong with the “green” movement.

To our stupid politicians this is a feature not a bug.

Green light bulbs… heck, I’ve had them for years… blue, red, yellow too… is it Christmas yet?
