Reviews: A review
Over at Vuurwapen blog, a critique of the press release disguised as a gun review. This is a bit annoying but, apparently, it’s a successful blog model to reprint press releases and stock photos because enough people do it.
Robb on what makes it a review. More from Jay.
Here, I’ve done my share of reviews. I mean the real kind, not the stock photo and spec sheet. And you can tell that they’re real reviews. And I’ve also linked to the types of reviews Vurrwapen mentions. I do that if it’s a product that I think is interesting. Or if I’m making fun, like when I say Oh, look a slightly different XD or Look, another 1911.

It’s one thing to announce that a Gun Manufacturer has a New Product coming out. It’s another to review something that has only 10 Test Models made, and claim it’s Fantastic. I’ve got boxes of old Gun Publications from the 80’s and the 90’s where the Staff Writers always talked about the Great Gun that they just got as part of the Review Rotation. A couple of them did say (Rarely!) that they wished the previous Reviewer had taken the time to clean the New Gun before they shipped it to them. But you hardly ever read something about how the Manufacturer would tell them to Field Test them and let us know what, if any Defects or Modification need to be made before they start Full Production.
You should READ all the Crap that was written when Smith and Wesson revealed the Original Sigma! You’d think we’d just won WW2!

Yo dawg! I heard you like reviews so we reviewed reviewers reviewing reviews while you reviewed reviewers.

Dammit, I was going to add a “Yo dawg, I heard you like Kel-Tecs, so we put a Kel-Tec on your Kel-Tec” comment to Robb’s P3^3AT post, but he beat me to the joke.
Dammit.

My thoughts. Bottom line, gun reviews (online or not) tells us what it’s like to BUY a gun. No one (yet) tells us what it’s like to OWN a gun.

I’m gonna talk about this on the podcast later today.
Sometimes I put up a press release but I NEVER call it a review. I’ve reviewed 2 firearms thus far and have 3 in the pipeline. They are never regurgitated material.
