That’s a lot of ammo
ATK gets contract to provide 450,000,000 rounds of fo’tay to Homeland Security. Seems like a lot to me.

Maybe they’re planning on arming the TSA. What could go wrong with that? After all, these were the same people that were recruited via pizza box and bus shelter ads.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:51 pm
Why, it’s not even two shots for each of their targets.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:55 pm
Is DHS going to start illegally sending ammo to Mexico?
March 19th, 2012 at 2:12 pm
See, if everyone just used the Beretta like the Military is forced to do, then DHS could just use Military Stocks, but NOOO!
March 19th, 2012 at 2:19 pm
That’s at least one for every leg in America…
March 19th, 2012 at 2:26 pm
You would think the ramped up production would drive unit costs down…but I think the increased demand for brass = hold onto your wallet/invest in one of those .22lr conversions.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:27 pm
And don’t forget the NFA tax on that many destructive devices….
March 19th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Silly preppers, somebody put them on the watch list.
Comes out to roughly 1956 rounds per employee. Thing is only a small fraction are firearmed qualified.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:38 pm
but why? .40 sucks.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:42 pm
That’s just enough for a fun afternoon!
🙂

This ammo stockpile will be used as a reason to make the TSA employees LEOs instead of their current status – hat check girls & boys.
March 19th, 2012 at 3:08 pm
In the manner of a typical 60s protest chant –
Hey, hey, ATK
Mis-deliver all that .40 caliber my way
Hey, hey, ATK
Don’t send it at all to the TSA

Its an IDIQ contract so the key words are “up to”. Up to 450 million rounds. Up to 5 years. Not sure what the minimums are but they would be much more informative.
March 19th, 2012 at 3:57 pm
Well they have to order extra. After all with how many guns the atf looses annually one could only imagine how much ammo goes missing..
March 19th, 2012 at 3:58 pm
I like the idea of America’s gestapo not having any ammo.

Vaterland Sicherheitdienst has most federal law enforcement agencies (I don’t want to look up which because the total number makes me want to buy ammo and build a bunker).
March 19th, 2012 at 4:04 pm
Can I say “fucking Shrub”, here?
March 19th, 2012 at 4:09 pm
You can, nk, but it was a bipartisan belief that a lack of LEO coordination caused 9/11.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:15 pm
Yes, SPQR, and instead of trying Gorelick for treason, the Shrub made her, or agreed to make her, one of his judges. The aftermath of 9/11 defines clusterfuck.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:17 pm
Anyway, that wasn’t your point. I’m kind of biased because I admire Ashcroft and I thought the gaps should have been closed through DOJ under his watch.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:29 pm
Makes me wonder. With how bad a shots the atf crew is shouldn’t they be ordering about 3 times this much???
March 19th, 2012 at 4:36 pm
That’s a lot of ammo for MExican drug lords.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:47 pm
Hmm… just as well armed as the military….. who said that again?
March 19th, 2012 at 5:19 pm
I really believe that has to be a misprint or misquote. I don’t believe all the federal LEOs combined would shoot that much ammo over 5 years.
March 19th, 2012 at 6:11 pm
And they accuse “US” of being preppers??? That’s more than the SEAL teams order, and I know how much those guys shoot!
March 19th, 2012 at 6:44 pm
What will this mass purchase do to the price of ammo — 40 caliber and otherwise?
March 19th, 2012 at 8:12 pm
Don’t forget the Coast Guard is part of DHS now, and I would imagine they go through quite a lot of ammunition in their training programs. The Coast Guard used to be part of the Department of Transportation.
March 19th, 2012 at 9:14 pm
it’s a one year contract, with option to renew every year for up to 5 years. the max amount is up to 450mil, but with the proposed budget squeeze and everyone in the .gov scrambling to cover their budgetary arses i’m not sure how much of this contract will be fulfilled. also, most of this amount will be used for training. lord knows, most of the .gov leo’s need it.
March 19th, 2012 at 10:33 pm
I wonder what it would weigh out to. That’s what, 450,000 cases of 1000. If you can ‘figger out how much a case of fotay weighs, you can ‘figger out the shipping. I’ve not been in s/r for a while, but when I was…. Max load for semi was 80,000 pounds. 40 in the trailer.
March 20th, 2012 at 9:51 am
Isn’t one of the “you might be a terrorist if…” stockpiling ammo according to the DOJ and FBI?
March 20th, 2012 at 11:21 am
Since they generally only shoot themselves in the foot, that’s a lot of feet. Did they do a contract for crutches?
March 20th, 2012 at 2:35 pm
Up to 450M rounds over 5 years, so 90M a year. The training regimen at FLETC is 2000 rounds per agent per 13 week stint. Plus the existing agents need to practice and qualify on a regular basis (quarterly). If you figure 2000 rounds per agent per year, that’s enough for 45,000 agents. I don’t know if DHS has that many, but it is a large umbrella organization, with multiple subordinate agencies, and I could easily believe they have to supply 25,000 or so. As another commenter posted, this is an “up to 450M” order, so it sounds like a purchasing agent ordered 2x or 3x the expected need. LE agencies went through the same shortages we went through in 2008-2009 (only their shortage started a year or so earlier), so that would be prudent. 450M *sounds* like a lot, but then so do the 5K and 10K round stockpiles a lot of us gunnies keep on hand.
