Mocking their success
Gail Collins at the Paper of making up the Record has a sad because the NRA is successful at getting the laws it wants passed. You see, their continued success will be their demise. Because they’ll run out of stuff to do. And, only if you’re not good at something, will you continue, I suppose. Which is good news for the NYT.
Also, she calls for a federal concealed carry ban.

I don’t read the NYT, so I’ll go by just what you wrote. Organizations do want to survive, so they change agendas. The March of Dimes started out to fight polio. Once that fight was won. they went after birth defects. Nothing wrong with that. The NRA will focus on reopening ranges in high schools and colleges and teaching shooting skills to new gun owners.

When the NRA is known once again (as it was in the 1st half of the 20th Century) mostly for educating new shooters, running rifle competitions at local, state and national levels using DCM surplus rifles, and no longer has to fight a defensive effort against infringement of the 2nd Amendment, they will indeed be a different organization.
Of course, if Ms. Collins is basing her assessment of the NRA’s future upon the way the Brady Group, CSGV, Bloomberg, et al., have successfully embraced their failure, she might have a point.

That editorial ran in my newspaper as well, and I just chuckled at how she hits every anti-rights talking point and uses all their rhetoric strategies. Leaving out details, the “For teh Childrens!” argument, everything.
This is running in a very Republican area, lots of outdoorsmen, and the newspaper (which was boasting about how well they were doing up until they were bought out by a major liberal media conglomeration a few years back) wonders why their circulation has been dropping off so much…

“Also, she calls for a federal concealed carry ban. ”
Not a damn chance.

So if success is the doom of the NRA, what is the future of the NYT?
Operating income has been cut from $187K to $56K in the past 5 years. (That is almost a 2/3 cut in income) Owners’ equity has been halved in the same time. At this rate, they won’t be publishing coupons in 5 years.
Or if success=failure then her mind, failure probably equates with success.
The funny thing is the stock hasn’t been abandoned. Rational markets? not a chance.

It’s also clear she never met anyone who had to deal with a violent stalker. You need to be armed most when you are on a known schedule at a known location.
Going to and from work. Picking up and dropping off kids at school or day care. Going to and from religious services.
Just the places people always ask “why would you need to be armed at church?” Because some crazy idiot might be waiting in the parking lot when service ends.
I guess she thinks we should hold a candle-light vigil. (Except you usually do that for the deceased.)
