Antiquated
Police chief says shotguns are antiquated and they want rifles. Shotties are far from antiquated but you use them for different things than you would a rifle.

Come on chief, just man up and say you want some new toys.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:48 am
What he means is that shotties don’t go well with their new BDU’s and helmets.

I guess shotguns just aren’t “operator” enough.

When did you become a part of the main stream media Unc? Partial quotes are misleading dude.
Shotguns don’t have the range, so he calls them antiquated. He doesn’t just pull “antiquated” out of his ass like you seem to imply he does.

Oh, the good old days when cops only shot you if you were on the same block as them. I guess with Americans getting overweight, including cops, they just can’t be bothered to get out of the car for some close quarters engagement.

Sorry dude, chief is right, shotguns aren’t needed tactically anymore. It would behoove you to Go take a gun site class with the wheelbarrels of money you make.

Don’t the Federales have Grants to Arm Police Depts with ARs? Sounds like he just needs to fill out some Forms.

What he really means is he needs something that will kill at a 100 yards, just in case the suspect might be carrying a knife.

Meet in the middle and hook him up with some surefire foregrips. Flashlights make everything tactical.

Hmmm, don’t shotguns also use single solid lead projectiles…Slugs! Yaahh, they aren’t accurate over 100yds. Just ask Bambi…
And they don’t cost $2k toys and training!

‘Diebold said most of the officers own their own rifles, set to their own preferences, and will be able to use them on duty provided they conform with the policy.”
‘Getting new toys’- or wanting ‘official permission’ to run the rifles these guys already own and love?
That seems reasonable.
Heck- I figure, doesn’t it make sense to carry the rifle AND the shotty? Toss in a .308 bolt gun while you’re at it.
The Chief’s request is in response to a perceived need for greater range & accuracy. Perhaps better reporting would have included something like, “…I then asked police Chief Mike Diebold to recount 3 instances where AR15s in his officers’ hands would have been beneficial…” Maybe they really need ’em. Maybe not- we don’t know cause the reporter fails to find out.

OK then.. we will give you carbines that use the magazine and caliber of your carry gun.

My bro-in-law picked up his own AR to go in the car with him on duty.

When I was a cop, I bought my own rifle to take to work with me.
In my opinion, an AR makes more sense for the average patrol officer, but not for the reason you think: The 870, God bless it, is a gun that’s dependent on the operator not screwing the pooch to run properly. All you have to do is watch inservice training at the range to see officers that fire exactly 14 rounds a year from their shotguns, shortstroking, even letting the thing recoil out of their hands. It’s not for the untrained and uninterested. A semi-automatic carbine is easier to shoot, easier to reload, and has the capacity to make reloads happen less frequently.
In the six months I was on the street before I got the rifle, I can tell you about two calls where I thought “This shotgun will have to do, but I would really like to have a rifle here.”
I’m not in the “officer safety trumps everything” camp, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a cop to ask for a more capable, easier-to-run long gun.
