I am reminded, every time this Obama tire inflation business comes up, of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The intrepid reporter Raul Duke and his Samoan attorney rent a Caddy convertible for their ride to Las Vegas, and inflate the tires to 100psi to stiffen the ride a bit, but mostly because they are drunk and high. At least they had that as a reason, but not as an excuse, for their behavior.
Yes, keeping tires inflated properly helps with gas mileage. So does having gas to put in the tank. I think I know which is more important, and I seriously doubt the President agrees with me.
I always fill my tires to 5psi higher than the recommended levels and it does noticeably help. (My VIN tag recommends 36psi, I go 40)
Also unless you go stupid high, like Dr. Duke’s 100PSI Red Shark, it really isn’t DANGEROUS as the first time you go over a bump the excess will fart out the tire bead.
I usually go with about the max psi listed on the tire, not what’s on the vehicle door tag. For passenger tires that used to be 35psi, but my newest tires have the max psi as 44.
Nowhere in your link does President Obama say anything about over inflating tires. In the clip you link to he only references “proper inflation”.
Are you – and everyone else here – really that dense, that gullible, that desperate to hate our current president because he’s…
My inference is certainly less extreme, and clearly more accurate, than yours.

Spring rain and Over inflated tires were the cause of an accident up on I-70 last year. Cause a car to hydroplane into the path of a semi. Semi won.

He did not suggest overinflating your tires, which is a dumb idea. He simply said “inflate your tires to the proper levels,” which does help save gas.
