OMG someone might make meth
Water purification system that uses iodine and, well, iodine might be used for meth. So, the .gov shuts them down.

‘Somebody’s going to purify their own water? Perhaps enjoy a bit of self sufficiency? We simply can’t allow that!’ – some low-level .gov functionary [eyeroll]
I’ve read various place that with all the restrictions on Sudafed and whatever else that deconvenience all us law abiding citizens the cartels have gone to a centralized production system. That’s lead to stronger meth selling at lower prices and actually increased availability. And that was before Holder’s DOJ started selling them guns!

Dammit! Iodine is what you use to make my most favorite dangerously-sensitive explosive, since I was a little kid. Much is the fun I have had with nitrogen tri-iodide.
Oh God I hate the Goddamned drug pigs! As a professing Christian, I say “Goddamned” advisedly. All drug pigs go to hell.

Iodine is a pretty horrible drug in its own right without its use for making meth. It’s a necrotic. Sure it kills the germs but it also kills your own tissue. Don’t use it myself, no tears lost.
