My office defended a woman like that in Illinois. Her husband used her as a punching bag for a long time. She finally put a revolver in her apron pocket and then a bullet in him. She was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, honest but mistaken self-defense, because she could have run off to a shelter with homeless drunks, drug addicts, and just released inmates. She got five years probation. Judges may have to give stupid jury instructions but they don’t need to be stupid at sentencing.

Just imagine if Bill Clinton had married a Southern gal:
Officer: “Why did you shoot him 17 times, Ma’am?”
Bill’s notional Southern wife: “Well, Officer, my piece jammed partway through the third magazine.”

Spousal abuse ranks with child abuse, in my view. Abusing another person, is not how one should find anything. Especially, any form of self awareness. Think about it.
