Massachusetts: once Liberty’s cradle, now, Liberty’s grave.

We had to defend lawsuits like that 4 times while I belonged to Douglas Ridge Rifle Club in OR. It cost the club over a quarter-mil in legal fees, which they stiffed the members for with several $100 assessments. After the first lawsuit, I told the Board to go after the instigator (a disgruntled ex-member was behind all four lawsuits), but they and their lawyer were content with just defending, not counter-suing. As a result, the idiot tried to bring down the club 4 times, not just once. We lost about a fifth of the membership over this, including me…

I believe this is the case where the homeowners displayed fully in-tact rounds (ie, bullet+casing+primer) to the media, claiming that those were bullets that had hit their houses from the firing range.

  4. SPQR Says:

Many years ago, a range I frequented had a nearby homeowner show up and claim to have had his house hit. He showed intact .45 ACP bullets without any rifling to the county board of supervisors.

Well I know of one case were here in Texas a farmer got his barn shot with a AK round (7.62×39.) It was verified a father & son did shoot that day at the range. And that berm pointed right at the barn a mile away. Plus the berm was low.

Sue? No, he didn’t but they took that berm down and no shooting in that area was allowed anymore.

It does happen. So guys, aim strait!

Gee, I have a boat in the marina in Emeryville, CA – one evening last year I heard a “clack, rattle, rattle” on deck, and in the morning I found a .45 FMJ with a serious dent in it on deck – who do I sue? (note that a rough part of Oakland is within .45 range of the marina)

Not sued, but our club range was first restricted from rifles and then closed – for lost membership – after houses were built a mile + down range.

  8. Kristopher Says:

Rivrdog: Of course the lawyer is happy to just defend.

He got more money that way.

  9. Bryan Caskey Says:

This is why my rifle club is VERY serious about safety rules and making sure that all rounds impact a berm.

As I am on the board of our club [700+ members]. I am pushing for a 200yd range in addition to our 100, 50, and two 25s.
Behind our berms is farmland, but the farmer has had rounds go over the berm and hit his tractor.
Since then, we have been very strict on impact and proper gun handling.
I am rethinking the new range.

  11. Skip Says:

    Read that as 2-50’s, 1-25.

Toll Brothers stupidly (?) are in the process of re-grading land to create McMansion building lots right next to my shooting range (Scarsdale/Ardsley, NY)
The range has been around since 1929 and is technically a police facility (with mostly non-LEO membership), so it should be safe, but who knows?
The good news is that all of the shooting lanes face into high granite cliffs – the only way for stray rounds to strike any homes would be if someone on the line were firing way too high and too far to the right.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
