Stopping power

Two Harlem police officers shot 84 rounds at a guy, hitting him 14 times. He survived. Where did the 70 go?

At least the parent does not claim the criminal son was an angel on his way to recovering his lost halo.

“That’s my son! That’s the animal who shot me and killed my daughter!”

  2. D2k Says:

    Off by 1*10 error there.

  3. Critter Says:

Meh. I’ve seen plenty of police shootings, and had to investigate a few. My observations are that 115 grain 9mm hollowpoints, of whatever manufacture, are not very effective. I’ve investigated several shootings where the suspects took multiple hits and not only survived but ran off. I know a lot of folks who love their 9mm but it really isn’t a serious caliber. That said, this suspect in the article looks like he was making a good effort to commit suicide by cop and botched it up, even With two mag changes per shooter.

  4. Alan Says:

Do they actually teach spray and pray in cop school?

Seems like every time cops shoot at anyone these days it’s several magazines worth and a crazy low hit rate.

  5. Dan Says:

Underscores the need for all of us to practice as much as we can, and to take training classes when possible. Plus as they mention in the comments on that article that hideously long NYPD trigger isn’t doing them any favors.

  6. mariner Says:

    Where did the 60 go?

The same place the other ten went?

They don’t remember because they lived it?

  7. The Duck Says:

Yeah where did 70 shots go? Caliber makes little difference if you do not hit something important, and if you only shoot once or twice a year you are not going to hit much. At the range the target is not usually moving or trying to kill you.

Think about only driving your car twice a year, then being suddenly on a NASCAR track, and that is fairly simple turn left and go fast

  8. Huck Says:

Alan, I’m firmly convinced that LEOs do not know what those objects on top of the slide at each end are for.

  9. JFM Says:

Haven’t we seen this over and over through the years? It comes down to this, “Gear is cheap-training is expensive”. So people get the police they pay for.

  10. guy Says:

With all the copper thefts going on, I going to assume the errant rounds had already been turned into street cash before they had even hit the ground.

  11. Bill Says:

With 34,500+ members and only maybe 100 firearms instructors, getting everyone qualified more than twice a year is a bit difficult. Our instructors do the best they can with the time they have. To Alan and JFM and Huck, take your turn on the two way range and then tell us how it’s done.

  12. Cargosquid Says:

Where did the other rounds go? Doesn’t matter. They have immunity.

  13. Mike Says:

The article does not provide enough facts. How many of the hits were solid and not just grazes or extremities? Was the guy behind any cover? That could explain why many of the shots fired by the officers may have missed or were ineffective.

  14. Gerry Says:

    Bill,

With all do respect: If the only time you shoot your weapon is during quals, you screwing yourself. Thats not the instructors fault.

  15. Crotalus Says:

So much for “Know your target, and what’s behind it”. And yes, cargosquid, they have immunity, unless the people defy Bloomberg, get guns by hook or crook, and return fire. But I ain’t holdin’ my breath.

  16. Mr Evilwrench Says:

The cops don’t have any motivation to be careful; after all, they’re not paying for the ammo.

  17. emdfl Says:

#16 – or the damages caused by any of their misses…

  18. The Duck Says:

70 feet http://www.policeone.com/officer-shootings/articles/5468505-NY-cops-fire-84-shots-at-suspect-who-lives/ so 1-1/10th of an inch off from a perfect sight alignment, would result in approx 14 inches off on target

  19. Bill Says:

Gerry agreed, the NYPD does not have a gun culture, nor any interest in forming one. I personally would love to see the department run its own IDPA but it’s not gonna happen. Judging by the photos I’ve seen there was a copse of trees behind the shooter. I do laugh at all the cop haters who comment here, cops are far from infallible but the majority I’ve met took the job to help people. As I have told many haters, “Don’t like us? Don’t call us.”

    Crotalus—Anywhere, any time.

I regularly shoot pistol at 150 feet and keep the rounds on a standard silhouette target.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
