E.J. Dionne bleating a push for repeal of Stand Your Ground Laws:
What’s insidious about “stand your ground” laws is that in every jurisdiction that has them, these statutes tilt the balance of power in any street encounter in favor of the person who has a gun.
Better to be a victim!
An easy garlic peeler. I never knew these existed. I did know about the two bowl method.
Local Volkswagen president: That’s a sort of thing that makes us a bit nervous. I expect as much from a German company.
And I’m kind of surprised that FedEx opposes the bill given their CEO’s political leanings. Of course, given that, it may be a property rights issue.
And so, America has come to this: a woman sobbing while a uniformed TSA agent pats her down.
NRA’s training programs: So far in 2012, Kayne reported that the NRA sales are running about $265,000 above what they expected at this point in the year.
Excellent. But the anti-gunners insist that gun ownership is on the decline.
Emily Miller: D.C. Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown, who will vote for the bill, has made a 180 on gun rights.
And she took him shooting. Amazing how that works.
Update: In comments, Andy points out that:
He picked up some spent brass as souvenirs, which is a felony for a resident of DC to have for a calibre for which they don’t have a registered firearm. Hopefully doing away with that stupidity will be part of the reformation.
Yup, stupid law. Perhaps Mr. Brown will amend the law so he’s not committing a felony.
Update: Emily emails that the law changes that. And that she doesn’t think DC law prohibits possession of casings either. I presumed DC law mimicked MA law and ammunition was defined as ammo and components.
Update: In comments, a lawyer I know says it’s illegal for others but Brown may be excused since he is an officer acting in his official capacity.
A bit back, I posted the recipe for my barbecue sauce. That was the mango version. I’ve also done a peach. But this weekend, I did something new. Strawberries:
Not sure how the sauce tastes yet but I will say that cooking strawberries have the most amazing smell.
A few folks have asked what the big deal is about CrimsonTrace starting to make LaserSights with a green laser. The big deal is daytime visibility. On a bright, sunny day, a red laser can difficult to see, which would make acquiring a target more difficult. The green lasers draw your eyes almost instantly in bright daylight.
The con of the green laser is battery usage. They go through them much quicker. I have four red lasers and they all still have the original batteries. Not sure a green one would have lasted that long. Also, tactical Tommies, operators and mall ninjas will say that the green laser is easier to track back to the source and the bad guys can figure out where you’re at. I can see how this would be of concern if you were operating covertly in some place ending in -istan. But for those of us who carry a gun for self-defense, people will already know where you are because it will be the spot the bullets are coming from.
Sadly, their green model won’t be out until next year. And I need one for my Buy A Gun day purchase, which I’ve been meaning to take a picture of.
In Michigan, some law went into effect regarding invasive species. Somehow, this means that open range pigs with certain hair color are illegal. So, the DNR has taken armed SWAT team to hog farmers’ land and conducted felony raids. Some farmers shot their own pigs to avoid a felony rap.
Update: Via email, someone said the claims are not consistent with the law. And that it is possible these were actually hunting preserves, which is a far cry from farmer. And also not legal.
Where Great Britain Used To Be: that’s why they call the people ‘subjects’.
I’ve mentioned these before, but here’s an interesting video:
They even test it on a full auto.
The Zimmerman case isn’t about guns. It’s about attacking a conservative lobbying group.
I know he’s right because CNN thinks otherwise.
Well, sort of. Looks like in his effort to woo the gun vote, he gave a speech at the NRA annual meeting. He wants to stand up for hunters and sportsmen. And those who want to defend themselves. He also mentioned Fast and Furious. And he cites founding fathers rhetoric.
Seems he’s trying to convince people that he’s not the man he once was, the man who supported a ban on sporting rifles.
In terms of presidentin’, I’m guessing he’d be none too supportive of gun rights but I doubt he’d be hostile either. We’ll see.
Some horrible cartoons, on which Mike Riggs writes: See the rest of Wuerker’s submissions (spoiler: they all suck) here. And, yes, they are awful and not funny.
Meanwhile, a lot of newspapers didn’t win any but Politico and Huffington Post did.
M&P full size compared to M&P Shield. Does the shield come without a manual safety?
Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
