Sadly, these are the “new” versions. They do not sell the original versions any more. I am fortunate that I have the original version on VHS that I can watch whenever I want. I wish I had the original versions on DVD but I could not afford a DVD player until after Lucas remastered them.

These are the edited “enhanced” versions with all the cgi junk in them.

Well, crap. I won’t be getting them then.

If anyone wants the a good copy of the original, unaltered trilogy, look for a torrent of the Laserdisc rip (no joke). It has remastered sound, and a couple of improved sound effects. No other alterations.

I will still quote the movies, but I will not give Lucas another dime.

I’d like to clarify that I own at least 3 copies of the trilogy (favorite movies growing up), so I think I’ve earned the proper version mentioned above.

Saw it Opening Day back in 1977, went back 5 more times that month, and paid for the rest when they came out. Lucas and I are more than squared away on the dollar side of the issue.
Having said that, I bought a VHS to DVD Convertor years ago, and have put my Unedited 3 Film VHS set in Storage. And guess what?

I have the trilogy on DVD. The DVD’s that I picked up a few years ago are “Full Screen/Limited Edition/Digitally remastered” AND they come with the original theatrical release on a second disk.
I have had mine for less than five years. Maybe you can still find them somewhere.

I watched the original movie in theaters back in the 70’s and was delighted with the experience.
A few years later, I watched it again on a small Black & White TV on HBO, and actually had to listen to the dialogue and consider the plot, instead of just enjoying the loud noises, the bright colors, the flashing blasters, and so on. I realized the movie is a B-grade space western.
Sergio Leone could have made a much better version of Star Wars, and Clint Eastwood as Han Solo would have rocked.

Having watched the BDs of the Original Trilogy, frankly, it’s not that bad.
It’s not great, but it doesn’t ruin everything – and it’s better than a VHS rip.

I’ve said for a long time, George Lucas was an awesome technician and technical innovator. Star Wars represented a paradigm shift after what we’d had before, but as a producer he’s B-movie hack. He confused the fact that he’d created the right thing at the right time with the idea that he was an auteur. That said, much of the suck in the prequels came from the fact that the story arc was inescapably pre-established, but there was certainly a lot that was just GL being a douchebag.
