I’m trying to find out what civilian available drone is the fastest and has the longest range. I realize the two requirements are mutually exclusive but want to find something that can do at least 100 MPH and be capable of staying aloft > 1 hr.

@Robert I think at this point the requirements are mutually exclusive. (check my facts here…) Civilians have to stay under 400 lbs and 400 feet. Most civilian drones are RC planes with bigger brains bolted in (check out diydrones.com). You may be able to sprint up to 100mph but you won’t be able to stay there for long. On the other hand, with conservative flying, a huge wingspan, attention to weight and large batteries. 1 hour of hand time is probably achievable in an airplane/glider configuration.
The linked RC heli is probably the worst of all worlds. It probably has <10 min flying time, poor flying characteristics, horrible video ect. However for a toy/first RC there are probably worse options.
If you want to start flying, this is the place to start: http://www.amazon.com/Blade-mCX2-RTF/dp/B003EXPDAC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336503153&sr=8-1

A great option (most RC helicopters are a rebranded version of this) is the Syma S107
$20 for a metal-framed RC helicopter. It’s amazing.
