Today, the ‘net is the internet
Going back through some old posts I’ve been meaning to follow up on and ran across this from Joe about humans transcending biology and how that will be aided by exponential technological growth. This stuff is fascinating and, frankly, a little creepy.
I’ll have to check out the book.

A ‘little’ creepy?

For si-curious (singularity-curious) readers, a smorgasbord of juicy human transcendence links are here at BrainBang.info, including links to Ray Kurzweil’s documentary and movie.
Though the book you speak of is jam-packed with exciting details and data-bits, the footage in Transcendent Man is mind-blowing. I like Kurzweil’s documentary and movie better than the book, for both contain the real, true, reality robo-human stuff.
Some might find it creepy. To me, it’s fascinating.

Of course, our progress could be dramatically slowed by a wrecked economy born of out-of-control government spending.
Increasingly, the road blocks on the “tech highway” are less of the type regarding the lack of a source of energy, and more about the lack of a source of funding.
In the end, we fail to develope “jet packs for everyone” because we are all on food stamps.
Socialized medicine will demolish our cyborg ambitions as the best minds go into fields where they can live the good life, you know, like the CDC and GSA.
My Sis-in-law works as a bean-counter for the CDC, and she always takes the most glamourous trips to 5 star hotels in exotic locales…

@HL: Ray Kurzweil is a millionaire many times over (maybe even a ga-zillionaire?). The Singularity progress of humans transcending biology is well on its way; there’s no stopping it. Not even the current Greatest Depression.
Government can meddle with, an attempt to suffocate, biotech advances. But as the technology becomes cheaper and faster, there’s not stopping private enterprise from making robo-humans a reality. They’re already well on their way.
This might sound extreme, but perhaps one way of viewing the Singularity is:
Accept and adapt or die.
Such an uplifting slogan I created!
