Because that would help

If you skimmed this story, you’d think a Wal-mart security guard drew a gun and killed a shoplifter. Only not. Seems the thief was armed and drew his gun which was wrestled away from him. But you have to read quite a few paragraphs in. And the employee wound up quitting over it. So why, then, is this the issue:

The shooting has put a spotlight on Wal-Mart’s policies regarding its loss-prevention officers, and it comes on the heels of another shooting four weeks earlier at a North Austin Wal-Mart that claimed the life of an Austin police officer.

Also, there have been 16 shootings at Wal-Mart properties in 6 months. They have just north of 10,000 stores.

Today, the ‘net is the internet

Going back through some old posts I’ve been meaning to follow up on and ran across this from Joe about humans transcending biology and how that will be aided by exponential technological growth. This stuff is fascinating and, frankly, a little creepy.

I’ll have to check out the book.

Three years

For three years, NOLA police kept a gun for evidence. They were sued:

Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office and the city must prove why they still need Errol Houston Jr.’s handgun, three years after he last faced a criminal count, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. The ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, scrapping its earlier opinion in the case, could lead to a change in how prosecutors and police view their right to hold on to seized evidence in criminal cases that are dropped but still could be prosecuted later. “This is really a hugely important victory,” said Marjorie Esman, executive director of ACLU of Louisiana, which represented Houston. “It absolutely changes how the DA’s office is going to have to treat property they retain that they don’t really have any need to retain.”

Chicks and guns

In India, more and more women are packing:

“I don’t have faith in the police to protect me. There are so many attacks on women these days. It’s everybody’s right to defend themselves. I think all women who are vulnerable should be carrying guns,” Sidhu said. She is not alone. A growing number of well-off, educated Indian women are turning to firearms for protection.

But I’m told only uneducated people are into guns!

Doing it wrong

So, the anti-gunners were whining about a fundraiser for a candidate at a shooting range. Seems that actually turned it into a high turnout event: Pro-gun Ohio Rep. Margaret Conditt was surprised to discover that criticism by gun-control advocates would catapult her shooting range fundraiser into a major event.

Guns deaths v. car deaths

The Violence Policy Center has gone and made up another study saying that gun deaths exceed car deaths. Well, under a specific set of circumstances in some states. No data points or break outs are provided, of course. These bogus ‘studies’ will lead to a coordinated campaign from the press and anti-gunners (but I repeat myself).

And there are other problems with ‘the study’.

What caliber for beach?

Heading to my unsecured and undisclosed location and blogging will be light. I have a few scheduled posts but don’t expect much. I was packing up and torn between the Glock and the M&P for the trip. The Glock, I know, is perfectly fine for beach weather since I’ve carried it many times. Opted for the S&W just to see if it holds up as well in salty air.
