A reader emails that he just got his NRA instructor certification and needs a Blow Out Bag/first aid kit. What’s in yours?

Give me a week, I’m at an Army Combat Lifesaver Course as I type, and plan on writing something along those lines.

I bought an IFAK kit from Cheaper Than Dirt. The only thing it didn’t have was a tourniquet. I got one of the North American Rescue ones to round it out.

In the IFAK that I carry everywhere or the actual bag?
For the IFAK, I go by the book:
Nitrile gloves
EMT shears
CAT Tourniquet
Izzy
Hemocon Chitogauze
HALO chest seals
Ace bandage
Decompression needle
WaterJel burn bandage
I actually have two, with more stuff (SAM Splints, lots of gloves, gauze, wraps, more Waterjel, foot/blister care, various hemostats/shears, stethoscope and BP cuff, etc) in a big Blackhawk bag that I got for a steal. One of the IFAKs goes on my web gear and is kept close at hand at home, and the other is a rip away pouch that lives velcroed to the trunk of my car, but will attach to the blackhawk bag in the zombie apocalypse.

I’d add a couple tampons because they’re good at plugging bullet holes, some extra nitrile gloves, a separate small kit with bandaids, betadine wipes/swabs and Neosporin, for those small scrapes. An Israeli battle dressing would be good, too. A small flashlight, and a decent headlight (think: Petzl) are handy, as is a set of airways and a CPR mask, some meat tenderizer for bee stings; people have medical emergencies unrelated to gunfire. Oh, and a fully charged cellphone that you have checked for connectivity – I got a “terrific deal” from T-Mobile, only to discover that at the range, located miles from anywhere, and where I taught and spent a goodly amount of time, I couldn’t get cell service, so I switched to AT&T.
Needless to say, if one hasn’t gone through a CPR/AED course and a good first aid course (the Red Cross does a “first responder” course that’s very good), that should be next on the list.

Beer, ammo, and toilet paper.
For food and shelter, I will be cooking the meat and preserving the hides of any liberals I can catch.

How many people is this to serve? If it’s just self/one: a decent TQ (CAT, SOFTT, SOFTT-W), An Olaes bandage, HALO seal. An NPA and Gloves are good too.
Other thoughts:
Don’t mix minor meds with your trauma supplies. When you need a TQ you NEED it right now, you don’t want to poke though a bag full of Motrin and wipes.
Every experienced combat med or emergency physician has stories about people using tampons. Usually involving people tuning a minor/serious bleed into a serious/fatal bleed. Don’t blindly stuff junk into holes. If you want to try to stop bleeding like that consider Celox-A, though you need a lot of direct pressure on it too.

Blowout bag? You can was, err, stear, clean a wound with some vodka. If, the need arose. Bug out bag, well, some band aids, some feminine necessities, and a sandy bar……

Training. Get training first and that will inform you as to what gear to carry.
I took a class in trauma treatment for firearms instructors, and the three most important things for you to have are the mindset to solve the problem, skills to know what to do, and a distant last is gear.
