Some lawyer sent The Oatmeal a letter telling them to stop saying funnyjunk.com steals intellectual property and makes money from it. And that The Oatmeal should send him $20K. In response, The Oatmeal raised $100K from fans in less than 24 hours. The Oatmeal has a lot of fans. Bonus: shady lawyer goodness.
Hosting other people’s content and profiting from it is an entire business model. And a successful one, I guess.

I think you forgot a link to TTAG in that last line!

no, it’s there

Oh, it’s successful alright. But I don’t think that Neatorama can be grouped with the likes of Funny Junk. We provide links back to the original content, photo credits and hat tips.

Do you ask permission?

Oatmeal has over $150k in donations now. Wow!

I often do. If a image owner has clearly forbidden using images, then I email and ask for permission. If I don’t get a ‘yes’, I don’t post it.
Here‘s a post that I wrote this morning. I’ve made it clear in the text who owns the picture. I’ve also provided a direct link to the business’s website and a hat tip.
If content is easily divisible, I divide it. That is, if a person has created five images on a theme, I use one and encourage Neatorama readers to view the rest at the link. That’s how we handle content created by others, including The Oatmeal. We don’t steal traffic; we drive it.
Funny Junk doesn’t do anything remote like that.
June 13th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
Funny Junk does not do that and Funny Junk hires incompetent lawyers who make ridiculous and extortionate threats.

No, Neatorama is not the same but, at the end of the day, the draw is other people’s content. Just like most blogs.

Okay, that’s a fair assessment.

I saw what you did there.
And I approve.

As someone whose content has been featured on Neatorama, I’ll back John up that they do, in fact, contact the site owner and ask if they may feature the post/picture. Very politely. *Before* they post it.
Class act, those Neatorama guys. And they’re welcome to link me any time! 🙂

John links here regularly enough and I appreciate it. The point is that people like pictures and other stuff rounded up.
