Cutting the cord
Les is moving to life without cable. If I didn’t have kids, I doubt I’d have cable. I can get everything I want from the internet through my Roku.

You would be surprised at the breadth and depth of the available kids’ shows on Netflix.

I have kids. I do not have cable. Just the Roku and a Netflix account.
This has advantages. Now that my daughter is spending God knows how long in the hospital, the TV is a ‘treat’ for her and is doing a decent enough job of keeping her entertained.

Wife and I cut the cord when we bought our house in 2009. No cable service where we moved and we didn’t want to deal with a dish so we said screw it.
Haven’t looked back since. We have a decent DSL connection though I wish I could get fiber but we’ve been using Netflix and Hulu with a laptop hooked up to a TV. God knows we got more done though when we didn’t have it hooked up.

What on earth did kids do all day in the centuries before cable existed?

I cut out TV this year. It happened when I realized it had been months since I turned the damn thing on.
It’s funny the cable company didn’t do any sell when I told them “Cancel the TV I don’t watch it.”
My guess is they’re getting a lot of that these days.

I haven’t had cable TV since 2007. Somehow I’ve survived.

Actually, it was Y2K. We bought the house in 2007, and didn’t get cable then either.

I don’t have cable. I just use the Internet and iTunes.

My son watches some, but I have the cable myself mostly for internet. DSL here was delayed by the state having a menstrual cramp over the phone company’s service rate. That’ll show us, I mean them. I have a blu-ray player that does the Netflix etc. off the LAN, but mostly I watch right on the laptop. Otherwise I have all of about 4 hours on my TV this year.

i have cable, but I only really watch sports and NCIS, and NCIS I could just watch on DVD & Hulu.

I had cable TV for maybe a few months, tops. I found it was much cheaper to simply buy the episodes of the shows I want on Amazon (after I ditched Netflix). It’s crazy what the cable companies charge you, considering the packages.
Imagine there’s only one store in town that sells a particular kind of ammo you want. In order to buy the ammo, you must also buy multiple boxes of ammo that you can’t use. This kind of business plan is downright hostile to consumers.
The current cable TV packaging system has been retarded since its inception, and has only been able to stay afloat because of the lack of alternatives. Glad to see that changing.

I don’t understand why CBS, FOX, & NBC execs don’t want us to enjoy commercial-free TV. I’m a DISH employee – AutoHop is great because you can easily watch commercial-free TV. Public Knowledge, a consumer advocacy group, is taking a stand for consumers by creating a petition that tells CBS, FOX, & NBC media to keep their hands out of your living room & DVR. Sign their petition to keep control of how you watch TVhttp://bit.ly/KFdn1Q
