Wish I had a nickle for every smelly chemistry project I did in our dining room on my “lab bench”. I got my Gilbert chemistry kit after my cousins blew up their table and a fair amount of equipment, my Aunt decided it was time to pass their equipment on to me. My mom, wonderful woman that she was, simply took me to a “science store” where I purchased new glassware and chemicals. Best fun a 12 year old could ever have!

I had a Gilbert Chemistry set -LOTS ‘o FUN!
Sure wish I’d know about the Atomic Lab- missed out on that, although I do remember one Armed Forces day at KAFB, they had tables set up with geiger counters and boxes of uranium ore – we could pick out the hottest sample and take it home for a souvenir!

I had one of those chemistry sets when I was a kid, back around WWII, but one of the chemical bottles only had a little paper note in it saying that chemical was needed for the war effort.

The one I really wanted was the Atom Smasher kit. Having met one much later in life, I realize it would be pretty doubleplus undangerous.

Hellz, I used to melt glass and lead as a kid back in the 70’s on my own; had to figure it all out myself. Glad my parents trusted me with a blowtorch 🙂 Definitely had some glassware and chemicals. Played around with electroplating, all that. I have a killer chemistry lab now, power tools and all the stuff they warn you about.

I played with M-80’s…the real ones. I suspect many of you did too.

And what list of irresponsible toys can be complete without…

    LAWN DARTS!!!!!

I was born in ’82. Just turned 30. Most of this stuff was illegal when I was a kid, and lawn darts shortly thereafter (I sure as heck remember throwing them across the yard and trying to get them to stick in the wood fence, which they WOULD). When I got to be around 13 or 14 though, we had the internet. When I wasn’t looking up porn in secret, I was more blatantly looking at things like the Anarchist’s Cookbook, the Poor Man’s Jame Bond, The Black Magic Cookbook, and others. I usually did this at school in the library. These resources that taught me how to make weapons grade explosives from the proper chemicals. Being a dumb kid, I mixed lots of “I guess that’s close” stuff together with varying results. You’d be surprised how many dangerous concoctions can be made by mixing the wrong kind of mothballs together with household cleaners. By denying access to this stuff with proper instructions, I think they certainly made it all that much more dangerous.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
