They were not occupied. They were receiving aid from Russia. The Russians and Afghanis always had a close relationship. It was in 1979 that a revolution threw out the communist government and the Russians went in. We helped the mujahadeen but when the Soviet Union fell, we left thme to their fate — Taliban and opium dealers.

Those pictures were from Afghanistan’s soviet era.
The troops were carrying PPSH’s and Mosin-Nagant carbines.
Yea, we used the Taliban to depose that government. Turned out to be not such a good idea. The Soviet union would have fallen anyway.

Just because they had PPSh’s doesn’t mean they were occupied. Those existed prior to that. Notice also the M42 helmets.
