As it should be
No charges against the guy who opened fire on two miscreants who tried to rob an internet cafe. Video of the shooting at the link. A few notes and things to ponder:
You’re range training goes out the window. Seriously, that is not textbook. But that’s what I’d expect. If you’re getting a proper stance, you’re likely not in a defensive guns use.
The appearance of the shooter and, presumably, the fact he’s shooting causes the robbers to haul ass. They like it easy.
Pay attention to the bystanders. I found that interesting.
He pursued the robbers. But, hey, it’s heat of the moment and adrenaline is flowing. He chose fight not flight.
Unfortunately, both robbers lived.

Yeah, some of the other customers just stand around with their hands over their ears, or wander around aimlessly. Like sheep.
July 18th, 2012 at 9:06 am
Unfortunately, it sounds like the gunman is already talking to a shyster:
…he still has a bone to pick with Williams, the elderly man who shot him, for firing while he (Henderson) was on the ground.
“I was down, and I’m not going to continue to shoot you,” he said.

I’ll donate to Williams’ defense fund. And help to get him a bigger gun.

“Unfortunately, both robbers lived.”
I don’t diasagree, but if they’d died, he’d now be getting the “George Zimmerman” version of American justice.
July 18th, 2012 at 9:39 am
Only to the door, though. Once they were outside – and therefore out of what most would consider immediate threat range – he stopped. That seems entirely reasonable, to me. If they’re still in the room or building, and they’re still armed, then they’re still an immediate threat.
This looks like a textbook perfect DGU, to me.
July 18th, 2012 at 9:42 am
He is lucky they didn’t both take his gun from him and shoot him with it. I have been told that is what usually happens.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:04 am
Enough of those “George Zimmerman” events, and they’ll lose their impact. It may even start sinking in to some of these people that the pattern means something.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:10 am
How long before the Po-Po step up to decry the “taking the law into their own hands”?
And I like the way he put out one last round before the door closed.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:12 am
Watch the man on the left in the white shirt at 29 sec. Gun in HIS pocket?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:24 am
@ Cargosquid – Nah, he’s protecting his Blizzard Authenticator ;P
July 18th, 2012 at 11:37 am
The gentleman charged the threat instead of looking for cover before engaging. My USMC buddy say he’s probably ex military doing classic counter ambush.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:44 am
Your.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:20 pm
Guess the armed robbers are out on bail already. Hope they let his .380 out on bail, too. Something tells me the guy has more than one pistol…
July 18th, 2012 at 12:50 pm
JD Rush, only Dawkins is currently out on bail. ($11,000 bond.) The second subject, Henderson, has not yet made his $31,000 bond.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:00 pm
Wow…Bond was probably set so low because a moron judge reasoned they were poor, hence the attempted robbery.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:15 pm
Cool, I was in scan headlines mode. Not that the other guy will be far behind.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:28 pm
I also noticed the lack of the city official saying “It’s best to let the robbers have what they want.”, which is good.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:36 pm
+1 on the former military.
Notice how he grabs his right wrist with his left hand? I’ve seen that in old 1911 army training videos.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:58 pm
What was exceptionally funny was the way his partner in crime ran over him on the way out the door.
July 18th, 2012 at 2:15 pm
“I was down, and I’m not going to continue to shoot you,” he said.
Gee …I guess he didn’t believe him.
Does Florida have a victim’s rights statute ( no lawsuits by felons against victims )?
July 18th, 2012 at 2:50 pm
Kristopher, yes – it’s called ‘Stand Your Ground’.
You may have heard of it.
July 18th, 2012 at 3:34 pm
It is a scream watching those thugs literally fall all over each other to get out. Went from starting to shove the victims around, to fleeing in panic. My take on the “reasonable apprehension of great bodily injury or harm”: all in the store remained in reasonable apprehension from armed robbers until they plainly were outside the store, in the open, running for their lives. They could have sought cover, turned, grabbed a hostage/shield, any moment. I’m not saying all of that went through the armed citizen’s mind, but I suggest it as a “state of mind” if the need arises for him to explain anything.
July 18th, 2012 at 3:57 pm
George Zimmerman was an attractive target for the racist rabble rousers BECAUSE Trayvon was dead and so there was nobody to contradict the “narrative” that the racists put out in the press. (Zimmerman’s account, of course, would be a racist lie, him being white and all. Well, partly white – you know, as white as the President. And you know how HE lies.)
Here, the “victims” of the shooting are alive, and worse, THERE’S VIDEO. So no way to claim this was a racist attack on innocent black choir boys who just came in to ask for directions.
July 18th, 2012 at 3:58 pm
The local Portland, OR area morning talk show highlighted this incident, and approved of the old man’s actions. Given that Portland is in competition with San Francisco and Seattle as hippy central on the west coast, that should tell you just about how much traction any negative response to this guy’s actions will have.
July 18th, 2012 at 4:04 pm
“You’re range training goes out the window.”
How much range training does Williams have?
July 18th, 2012 at 4:28 pm
“How much range training does Williams have?” Good point, Shootin’ Buddy.
Speculation: based upon the hit quality, and old-school left hand on wrist action, I’d blindly guess: not much. Seems like it was enough to get the job done though. Did Did mindset trump skill here?
Look at the way he’s running ’em down like his little .380 is some Nuclear-Heat-Ray of death.
July 18th, 2012 at 6:27 pm
i’ll buy that old geezer a beer any day.
July 18th, 2012 at 7:53 pm
“You’re range training goes out the window.”
No it doesn’t.
You adapt. Technique is not a fixed thing. You practice perfect technique on the range and then in the real deal you adapt, improvise, and overcome.
But that training is there. If it’s poor or non-existent, well you will do poorly or worse. The better the training the more you are able to adapt it and WIN. Yes WIN. Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing (as Vince Lombardi said.)
And the old gent in the film WON without a doubt.
July 18th, 2012 at 8:11 pm
It does illustrate that adrenaline leads one to do some things without thinking. His pursuit of the two thugs stopped barely in time.
And things looked very different to him, through his eyes, than they look on video. Something to think about.
July 18th, 2012 at 8:17 pm
Robb Allen: There was no mention of that in the media, just sensationalism about the self-defense provisions.
Yea, 776.032 states that crime victims using justifiable deadly force in Florida can’t be sued by the perps.
July 18th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
I love the little twist and check Mr. Williams gave the gun after the morons ran out the door. I imagine him mentally saying, “Damn, that actually worked!..”
lol
July 19th, 2012 at 1:47 am
Very small and squared off .380 pistol he had there. Colt Mustang Pocketlite? Sig P238? Anyone know?
July 19th, 2012 at 3:20 am
The guy sitting near center screen, who rotates his chair and reaches to his right hand pocket, definitely looks like he’s reaching for a gun. The way he is holding his hand/wrist just at the pocket opening just screams gun to me. Plus, he looks very calm and focused.
Big question I have is what would the shooter have done, if this guy had also started shooting at the bad guys?
If you were this guy, would you get involved?
July 20th, 2012 at 6:47 pm
@Brad-
It can’t be a Sig P238; it didn’t FTF.
I kid, I kid. And I kid only because I have a 4th generation P238 that fixed the recurring FTF problem.

Jeff: Other European made .380s have had similar problems.
The root cause, IMO, is that the euros load .380 a lot hotter than US manufacturers do. US ammo makers have to risk lawsuits by people using antiquated pistols.
Walther PPKs are also imfamous for this … they function fine with euro made 9mm Kurtz, but tend to fail with US made .380 ACP.
Euro ammo makers are OK if they stick to milspec ( and yes, some police forces and armies used the 9mm kurtz ).
