I am the sovereign ruler of me
And a couple of kids, until I turn them loose on the world.
Apparently, my looking out for me is some sort of -ism. And it’s cause for concern amongst statist pricks.
Also, seriously, this you didn’t build that thing. I think our president has the mind of a child.

Who has first dibs on your labor, your creations, your property and your ideas? That is one of those fundamental questions of governance that liberal/progressives don’t like to answer out loud, because their view contradicts basic human nature.
Everyone (except lib/progs)learned as children that what is mine is mine, what is yours is yours, and while sharing is a fine thing, ownership trumps the greed of others.

I submit for your consideration, the pencil. A tool no one in the world can make, yet it exists in abundance, cheap. It exists not by government decree nor by government action. It exists because a multitude of diverse and dispersed strangers, working for their own interests, create and produce some necessary elements. Elements that free people merge, divide and integrate until some first grader is able to pick up their pencil to copy down the wonders of Obama as they are told to them by the government union teacher. Oh, and in a pinch, with a No2 pencil, they can take out the old and modern Green Lantern.
So the question is, Why does Obama think the government’s incidental contribution to the pencil take priority over the millions of direct contributions by humanity?

Your children have better minds that that! Especially the slightly devious yet well socialized girl child 🙂

@mikee: the mentality of the leftist/child – “What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is also mine.”

“Hyperindividualism” is the collectivist straw-man representation of moral selfishness; it’s intended to wave people off of that “extreme” back into the muddled middle of compromise. They don’t want you to realize that there’s nothing about principled selfishness that involves “hurting others” — because they count on that error to morally disarm anyone who gets too uppity and intransigent about their individual sovereignty.
What’s worse, is that this straw man weapon is wielded equally by conservatives, Leftists and the muddled “middle”… witness that lightweight middleist James Joyner today, one hand waving away “Randian nonsense” (sans argument, as always) while lending the other to assist Leftist Ezra Klein, who is desperately retrenching to the middle after Obama’s embarassingly clarifying “vrai pas”.

In college, a doctrinaire lefty railed about “dangerous individualism”.
