He seems to think that people will follow gun laws and bow to government pressure, just like they follow prostitution laws.

That idiotic plan would not work. All a gun company would have to do is form a second corporation called, Sig Civilian Arms, Inc. That second company would sell firearms to the civilian market, and Sig Military Arms would sell to the government. Since they are separate companies, they would not fall afoul of the new rule.

Sure a company could do this but they better have some very special single-fire firearms if they ever want to sell another one in the private market. So when they lose the government contract, who do they sell to in the future? Or can they sell to private purchasers after the government/NYPD move to other firearms?
Not to mention, since their semi-autos would be restricted to the military and law enforcement markets, they would be subject to tighter export controls as significant Military Equipment with the general rule for license denial.
But what happens when someone in government wants to buy a firearm from a maker who doesn’t want the restrictions? How do they do that? Spec ops and the FBI usually have a few of every type of firearm.
And imagine the CEO explaining that he had agreed to never sell another semi-auto in the private market but he did get the one-time government contract. Of course, he has to keep being low bidder if he wants to keep selling firearms to the government.

After market magazines would blow his proposal out of the water, God those doofuses make defeating their stoopid ideas so easily.

A couple of manufacturers might leave the civilian market; some others might leave the LE market. Which is really bigger?

OK, another article by an idiot who really doesn’t know what he’s talking about. NPR’s Talk of the Nation had a half our segment on guns today and the ‘experts’ were so clueless that the host, not the regular, promised another segment next week to answer the questions e-mailed in.
Really, is understanding guns/gun culture really so hard?
I understand that supporting gun control is a valid political position, but not when you have no understanding of the subject! I’ve read articles and op-eds where the writers actually believed that during the ‘Assault Weapons Ban’ no magazine-fed semi-auto ‘military’ weapons and magazines that held more than 10 rounds were availible to the public. It was a BAN, right?
I view it as a type of magical thinking. Oh, and being dumb as dog shit.

@Mr Evilwrench:
we’ve been seeing lots of sales in the civilian market. Is the military/LEO market actually larger than the civilian market? Or is it not?

Spitzer hasn’t heard of Ronnie Barrett telling the LAPD to piss off over the CA 50BMG ban, has he.
August 9th, 2012 at 9:49 am
Actually, Barrett wasn’t the only manufacturer to stops selling in Cali. My understanding is that civilian sales exceed government sales by a wide margin, so any firearms CEO would be out of a job if they agreed to something so stupid.
This typical liberal “if we say it, it must be true” crap.

There was a time in America when someone like Spitzer would be ashamed to show their face in public. Now he works for CNN.
Come to think of it, that is kind of like never showing your face again, unless 1 of their 2 viewers is tuned in.

Right.Like Smith and Wesson, Keltec, Colt, Taurus, Springfield, et.al. wouldn’t just add a 3rd Shift for Pocket .380’s and 9mms and .40 S+Ws and .45ACPs Single Stacks, never mind the Revolver Lines.
Christ on a Crutch, how the Hell did these IDIOTS like Spitzer ever get their hands on Political Power?

Well, they are elected by the party of single mothers. And in his case, he has done alot to financially support single moms.
