Jeff Cooper thought a lightweight, short .308 bolt action with a scope backed up by iron sights was a good all around choice. He called this a Scout Rifle. It wasn’t supposed to do everything well, just do most things well enough that one rifle could be used to accomplish most shooting situations reliably.
So history is just repeating itself with a semiauto slant here, I guess.
PDB is correct in that using the SCAR “Heavy” as a “One Gun Solution” is a misguided endeavor. There is no “One Gun Solution.” Just as is there is no “One Perfect Pistol/Shotgun/Rifle Cartridge.”
But having shot OldNFO’s SCAR “Heavy,” that Rifle has moved to the Top of MY personal List for a Semi-Auto .308 Rifle, putting the FN-FAL into my Second Place (Sorry Weerd!). That Gun is GREAT!
It will not perform every role perfectly, but if I could pick only one of my guns, it would be the SCAR 17.
The thing it gives you over the other 7.62 Semis is light weight and simplicity.
The thing it gives you over 5.56 semis is 7.62. I love AR’s and have many, but I am not confident in a 5.56 over 300 yards…yeah, I know that bullet will get way out there, but I’m not convinced it does enough when it is out that far. The 7.62 is going to be a strong performer out to 600.
Yes, it is expensive. You will need to sell one of your AR’s and your M1A to buy one.

My “long range” rifle is a 30-30 lever with a 4x scout scope on it.
I know my limitations.

You can turn a bowl on a tablesaw but . . . a lathe would be so much easier.

PDB is a wise-one. I would like a .308 semi but I’ll keep the Garand for now because it’s already paid-for and I’m funds-deficient.
