These guys were shot at by Mexican Federales, so the guns were probably ARs sourced from the State Department, rather than AKs via the ATF F&F mess. State handles the exchange and sale of US guns.
If they ran a roadblock, I don’t blame them. As corrupt as Mexican cops and the military are, if you stop, you never know whether you are going to just be frisked or end up kidnapped by state agents working for one of the cartels. There have been three-way battles in large Mexican cities (Monterrey, for example) between municipal cops (working for one cartel), State cops (working for a rival cartel), and the Army (working for who knows who). The most honest ones down there are their Marines, and even they should not be trusted entirely. It’s a mess.
And running around unarmed in Mexico is a sure way to end up in one of those “Blog Del Narco” videos — beaten to death and then dismembered (although sometimes they don’t wait for your death before they start hacking off limbs). Seems these idiots have forgotten what happened to Kiki Camarena.

This assumes they were 5.56 rifles.

Uh, the latest news says they weren’t Marines, but CIA, and the Mexican Military has Arrested those Federales.

Bubblehead Les — other reports have them as DEA.
