It isn’t governed under any law.
The forest service is pulling the same crap whenever the posey sniffers complain about icky gun owners shooting in the woods.
Bush’s Interior secretary had to bitchlap a bunch of Clintonista District Rangers over this crap in 2006.

How exactly do the BLM folks know what is in all those vehicles? Magic weapon detectors?

I read the regs. It’s not as comprehensive as the BLM probably thinks it is.
For example, battleaxes and pikes are perfectly legal!
