My daughter just came home after two years in Oz, and she tells me that the (mostly, but not all, Asian) gangs have plenty of guns, it’s the regular, honest citizens that are pretty much disarmed. Since the gangsters tend to shoot mostly each other, the press generally doesn’t say much. They DO make a big noise when granny turns up with a WW1 bolt gun repelling burglars, however.
She also says this is true only in the “civilized” parts of Australia – the outback is not nearly as uptight, and finding a (discreetly) armed citizen is much more common.
