So there you are, waiting for the police…. with a gun. What? could? possibly? go wrong??????
I would asses the details very closely before dialing 911, just saying.
I’m not disturbing him, so he can continue to sleep until the po-po show, if he wishes. I’ll be WAAAY over here, with family and lawful guests behind me, quietly watching.
Let the cops deal with unknown intruder dude, who is under unknown chemicals or delusions.
Meanwhile, I am reasonably certain he won’t be waking up in a psychotic episode and cutting my (excuse me, “The Devil Prince that God told me to kill”) throat while I’m helpless.
Maybe he’s Mr. Magoo, maybe he’s Charles Manson — I don’t know, and i don’t care. Cops can rescue/arrest/have committed him, as needed. THEY get paid to clean puke out of the backseat of their cars.
I’m not really sure. If he’s breathing normal, just passed out, I’m tempted to say I’d put on a pot of coffee, watch whatever is on at that hour, and wait for morning.
OTOH, waiting for EMS and the cops to handle it sounds like the technically safest bet.
My dogs sure as heck wouldn’t be getting any treats for a week or two.
SIK’s position is that calling in the cops seldom makes things better. Often, or usually, in his many experiences, it makes things worse, or even far worse.
It was his house, his assesment of the situation in which he was involved at that moment, with his experiences with his local police, and ultimately it was his call. Your mileage may vary. To second guess, or to plan ahead with a concrete plan, makes no sense. You almost always have options, and you almost never know in advance what those options are going to be, nor the full consequenses of your actions.
The contemplation of principles however can give us some direction.

Not go back to sleep.
Not touch intruder.
Retrieve gun.
Call 911.
Wait.

Eichenlaub is correct. That’s an easy one.

Didn’t Anne Heche used to do that sort of thing? If the intruder is a hot chick…I will probably react differently than if it is a vagrant.
Also, the amount and nature of bodily fluid they are covered in will have an impact.

The water is on the doorstep.
The bread is on the table.
Give, my love, to the passerby.
To Christ and the Thief.

The guy needed help, that’s all.
