The fact overlooked by the “mandatory storage would have prevented this” crowd (who assume they weren’t locked up, which I believe has not been established yet) is that he was willing to -kill- his mother, who would have known the combo or location of the key. I doubt either key or combo would have stayed secure for long given how far he was willing to go.
