NRA president says assault weapons ban would likely fail

Seems pretty confident the votes aren’t there. Also, good reporting:

The head of the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Sunday predicted that efforts to pass a ban on assault weapons and restrictions on the same of high-capacity ammunition would likely fail.

What is this high-capacity ammunition I keep hearing about?

  1. John Says:

I just heard someone talking about banning “assault magazines”.

WTF is an assault magazine? Hitting someone with a rolled up “Time” or “Newsweek”?

  2. Other Steve Says:

Birdshot is what they must mean by high capacity ammunition. I didn’t know there was such hate for the stuff.

  3. cayton Says:

“What is this high-capacity ammunition I keep hearing about?”

It’s the Portal turret. “65% more bullet per bullet”

  4. Robb Allen Says:

+100 Internet Points for cayton and the Portal reference.

  5. Kristophr Says:

My bet: “High Capacity Ammo” would be any full metal jacket rifle ammo.

Encore pistols + KTW pistol ammo ban = ban on rifle ammo

  6. ExurbanKevin Says:

High-capacity ammo is when you accidentally double-charge a reload.

And yeah, I kinda support a ban on that as well…

  7. Ron W Says:

Terms like “high capacity ammo” and “clips” are illustrative that gun control arguments are constructed almost exclusively on ignorance and bigotry.

  8. chiefjaybob Says:

Wow. That lead sentence is chock-full of authorized journalist superiority right there. I’m not sure which is worse:

    1) The malapropism of “high-capacity ammunition;”
    2) The horrible grammar: “…and restrictions on the same of high-capacity ammunition…”
    3) That somebody actually hit, “publish” on this;
    or
    4) Layers of editorial oversight.

In retrospect, perhaps #2 is a typo: “… and restrictions on the SALE of high-capacity ammunition MAGAZINES…” Or not.

  9. Kirk Parker Says:

High-capacity ammo is needed for your high-magazine clips.

    Duh.

  10. Chas Says:

I get the impression that Keene has been handling this very well. He comes across as a very reassuring, affable, old professor, who knows his subject matter perfectly well. He really seems to know what he’s doing, while Biden and Obama seem to be faking it and fumbling their way along.

  11. Huck Says:

Sweet! Where can I get this high-capacity ammo for my high-velocity magazines?

  12. Other Steve Says:

Chas, yes, Keene is doing a great job. He has to because LaPierre FUCKED UP so badly with the one chance they had to get complete media attention. I bet Keene stays and LaP gets the boot/retires this year.

  13. Kristophr Says:

Huck: Hornady sells it. It has green lettering and pictures of zombies on it.

  14. ExurbanKevin Says:

If cayton wins teh interwebs for his Portal reference, Hucks wins everything else with a gratuitous swipe at the zombie craze…

  15. Sigivald Says:

Casings with too much interior volume…?

(No, nevermind. Don’t give ’em any ideas.)

  16. JKB Says:

If you are interested in an “assault magazine”, I recommend sticking with the women’s magazines. Bride magazine being consistently the heaviest and most devastating, able to destroy the strongest man. “Time” and “Newsweek”, like most of their liberal readers are not of much use when under imminent threat, unless the opponent is particularly vulnerable to being bored to death.

  17. lucusloc Says:

    @ExurbanKevin and Sigivald

They want to ban this because it effectively turns handguns and rifles into grenades, which are class 3 destructive devices and are already regulated. More useless laws. . . .

  18. Paul Says:

I’ll just say even IF the votes are not there, keep bugging your Congressmen and Senators as IF they VOTES WERE OUT THERE.

Keep them well aware their jobs are at stake.

  19. Tommy Says:

Paul: We want to send them back to where the were. Unemployed! In GREENLAND!
    😀

  20. Paul Says:

Seems pretty confident the votes aren’t there.

I’ve lost some of my confidence in vote prognostication since last November.

    And Tommy…Great “Princess Bride” nugget.

  21. Mike Says:

Oh, oh, I got a better one than “assault magazine” or “high capacity ammunition”. I saw this from a ‘tard commenting on NY’s new gun control laws — you ready?

    “personalized weapons of mass destruction”

You heard it here…er, second. Don’t be surprised if Piers Morgan starts using this one.

  22. wastme Says:

Don’t believe it. I can’t believe the NRA is saying this right now. Don’t let up, keep writing your representatives and let the know not to believe the media either. They are trying to downplay the whole thing so gun owners look the other way while they get their crap passed. Look what happened in NY.

  23. wastme Says:

Also let your repetitiveness know that they will be held accountable for keeping the executive branch in line and not overstepping its authority. That’s part of their job too.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
