Good, I was worried about the Senate

I was kind of worried that gun control might slip through the senate since NRA’s snubbing of Reid’s endorsement. But Reid says don’t count on it:

The Democratically (sic)-controlled U.S. Senate will not be a free-for-all of new gun regulations following the shooting at Sandy Hook, according to Majority Leader Harry Reid. Instead, Senators will focus on passing legislation that can move through the Republican-controlled House, Reid said.

That could spell doom for an assault weapons ban. Speaking on Nevada Week In Review, a news show on the PBS affiliate in Las Vegas, Reid said there’s no real chance of a new ban passing the House.

“Is it something that can pass the Senate? Maybe. Is it something that can pass the House? I doubt it,” he said in video of the program provided to TPM by Vegas PBS. “So I think there are things that we know we can do.”

If gun control works, how come it hasn’t yet?

Obama promises gun control that will prevent mass murder. It’s just common sense. Common sense suddenly being a relative term. And, of course, none of these proposals will prevent anything and will affect only law-abiding Americans.

I guess talking about this beats doing something about this.

And put them on a list too

MD governor wants to fingerprint gun owners.

More gun control in New York

Republicans sold New Yorkers out and caved on some of the most onerous gun laws seen to date. One thing the bill does is it moves the arbitrary number of rounds a magazine should hold according to people who don’t know guns from 10 to 7. No grandfathering, in some cases. Your Ruger 10/22 factory magazine is now illegal.

All sales must be background checked. And your therapist can report you if they think you’re a danger. And background checks (and fees) on ammo buys.

One one hand, I find that the restrictions being so onerous makes them ripe for a court challenge. But Jacob says NYers are fucked.

All you gun companies located in NY should pull out.

Update: Sebastian:

The new law in New York does not outlaw magazines that hold more than 7 rounds. You can still own a magazine that holds up to ten. It’s just that if you put more than 7 rounds in the magazine, you’re a criminal.

That’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

Libertopia

What could possibly go wrong:

Glenn Beck is Planning a $2 Billion Libertarian Commune in Texas

And it will have a theme park. I hope the theme isn’t how Libertarians are, mostly, really smug.

Sauce for the goose

Heh: James O’Keefe went to the homes of journalists from The Journal News and other news outlets to persuade them to put up signs saying “This Home Is Proudly Gun-Free.”

Sudden wealth

Suddenly, your magazines may be worth more than your guns.

Some people are wound way too tight

This is just ridiculous.

Lying to win

The Chicago PD put on a dog and pony show showing all the scary guns they’ve confiscated this year. Turns out, they lied about when they got the guns. Also, the fact the got any of them is unpossible since most of them are banned there.

Joe Biden has 19 executive orders for gun control

That’s the word from Politico. It’s a case, I think, for challenging the the sporting purposes requirement. As to what those actions are, here’s some speculation.

Weird

Since when do local cops enforce no fly zones that don’t exist?

So calm the fuck down. Careful passing on rumors.

The media spin

Yellow journalism and James Yeager. Reminds me of the youtube democrat presidential debate from a bit back where the press picked a gun question from someone who fit the media stereotype.

How’s that national conversation going?

A site on 3D printed AR-15 magazines that work:

Tell me again how that ban will work?

NRA president says assault weapons ban would likely fail

Seems pretty confident the votes aren’t there. Also, good reporting:

The head of the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Sunday predicted that efforts to pass a ban on assault weapons and restrictions on the same of high-capacity ammunition would likely fail.

What is this high-capacity ammunition I keep hearing about?

It’s kind of a pain when someone publishes your address, isn’t it

Someone mailed some poo to CynDee Royal, editor of the Journal News that published a map and addresses of NY gun permit owners. Also:

The package was the fifth potentially harmful parcel sent to the newspaper or its employees since a Dec. 23 article and online map that revealed the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties.

Rule one

An old cannon in storage turned out to be loaded.

Hah hah – no

Chuck Schumer says people should stop selling all these guns while congress works on gun laws.

Why would anyone need more than some arbitrary number of rounds?

Spikes

Pretty big change in polling from Gallup:

Americans’ Dissatisfaction With Gun Laws Spikes to 38%

Close to four in 10 say gun laws should be stricter, up from 25% in 2012

It’s not the ‘groundswell’ that the anti-gunners and the press (but I repeat myself) were saying happened but it is significant.

What media bias?

The press doesn’t really know guns, which is why we should discount most of their hysteria.
