The comparison has been made, and useful feature after recognizing it is a damn good choice as an entry level rifle (better than a .22 if you have the $).
After that it’s like adding another PnP device to your desktop PC or another set of Legos.
It’s this part of AR-15 fandom that most critics don’t get when they say it’s not good for hunting or home defense. They don’t understand that the AR can basically be configured to do anything, and done so with very little investment in tools or training. This article goes a long way toward explaining the rifle’s popularity. The assumption by critics seems to be that AR fans are just survivalist nuts or military wannabes. There’s some of that, but most AR fans I know are suburban men who like to tinker and customize. Basically, people like me.
In NYS, we’re still allowed Garands, but only if they’re over fifty years old. ARs are for free people. Yeah, it really is like the former East Germany here.

Barbie dolls for adults.
(It’s not the initial outlay for the basic rifle that’s so expensive; it’s all the accessories.)

I’ve never bought an AR 15….as a rifle. The closest I came was an assembled lower. Then an assembled upper a week later.

That’s a far better analogy, but it would fly over the head of almost anyone that isn’t a gunnie but does read Wired.

The AR-15 is a platform.
