Not much to say
Instead, I’m contacting the pressure cooker lobby so I don’t need a background check to make my assault baked beans.

So, SAF is accused of betraying gun owners. But NRA stands firmly against the bill. This is usually viewed as something that goes the other way around.
John notes that SAF should stick with what they do best: litigation. Leave the lobbying to the, uhm, lobbyists.
One thing I know about SAF is they always have a plan. I just don’t know what it is in this case. Granted, it could have have been a miscalculation on the part of SAF but I’m guessing they’re up to something. They usually are.
We’ll see.
Go ahead, try it.
Anyway, at first I was like Hey, it’s not terrible and if it does what the press releases said, some parts are pretty good. But then, the bill showed up. It’s all manner of not good and Dave Kopel tells you why:
The result of the disparity is “pro-gun” provisions which are actually very strong anti-gun provisions: The supposed ban on federal firearms registration authorizes federal gun registration. The supposed strengthening of FOPA’s interstate transportation protection exempts two of the worst states (the reason why FOPA was needed in the first place), and provides any easy path for every other abusive state to make FOPA inapplicable.
Further, the background check bill puts you at risk even if you’re trying to follow the law. So, all of you who didn’t listen to me when I was all like “Meh” were right.
Speaking of not listening to me, I also said that I thought the fix was in. Turns out, not so much:
In spite of a vote last Thursday in favor of debating new gun measures, some Democrats who are facing re-election next year in conservative states have already said they will not vote for the background check measure offered by Senators Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, and Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, forcing Democrats to look desperately across the aisle to fill the gaps.
Republicans, in the meantime, are bitterly torn between moderates who feel pressure to respond to polls showing a majority of Americans in support of some new gun regulations and conservatives who are deeply opposed to them.
Politicians want to be re-elected, you know. So, the bill may be going away.
So, in short, don’t listen to me.
John Kerry says students in other countries don’t want to come here because of guns.
Bombs went off in Boston during the marathon. Thoughts go out to the people of Boston on this horrible day.
I heard this on the news on the way home and thought to myself that people were toiling away at blaming some political group. Didn’t take long.
Remember during Sandy Hook how the press got substantially every thing wrong except that there was a shooting and where it was? Pretty much going to find that out in this case too, when the dust clears. For news, it’s better to be first than correct.
Don’t jump to conclusions.
There will be a gun bill and, now, it’s just mitigation.
The house has a gun bill ready. And here’s the plan. The bills will create a registry. And a lot more here what is a gun show or whatever.
But the interesting bit is that SAF’s Alan Gottlieb is cool with the bill. The interesting thing is that Gottlieb’s group claims to have had a hand in drafting it. This would represent a sea change in the gun rights movement. Usually, when there will, by God, be gun control, it’s written by NRA. And this is a substantial departure from that. Now, the bill, as it stands, does make some aspects of gun buying easier. You can buy a handgun out of state or guns over state lines. Just with a background check. The bill isn’t awful and concedes some of our points. I think we should go for more concessions before signing off on it. I still oppose it but it could be worse.
There will be gun control. Snoop Dogg and SNL said so. And pop culture is targeting people. It will fix some things for pro-gun folks. But there will be a bill called a gun control bill because we must do something for the children. Even if it wouldn’t have prevented any of the mass shootings that happened in the last decade or two. Symbolism and all.
But call your congress monkey and oppose it. Then, vote the bum out if he caves.
A bill to ban releasing concealed carry info data goes to Governor Haslam’s desk. The bill exempts politicians running for office because they like to send you spam.
To be a gun control advocate. Just details and stuff.
You people who don’t hunt only like guns because of how it feels and to scare white people. Or something.
Some Republicans tagged along and let the bill move forward, claiming they want the Democrats on record as being anti-civil rights. Dunno. They should have let it die. Don’t panic but contact your senator. Live coverage here.
So, a couple of Republicans helped “reach a deal” on the supposedly inevitable gun deal by proposing their own bill. The press even calls the bill “meaningful”. Except that a cursory reading of it tells me that the bill will:
Well, great, we need laws like that. In fact, we need them so much that that is already the law. Mind you, none of this would make schools any safer or prevent criminals and mentally ill from getting guns and so forth. The bill closes loopholes, apparently. Loopholes that don’t actually exist. But it’s something. And we must do something. Even if it’s stupid. And we get bonus points for doing the same stupid thing again! Background checks have exactly nothing to do with Sandy Hook, wherein the killer used the “shoot your mom in the face and steal her guns” loophole.
The anti-gun people aren’t happy about it. But they’re never happy about anything. The NRA says let’s talk about Obama instead and not this bill. And it looks like they do not approve.
Anyway, here details of the bill. And here’s some analysis.
Now, it looks like there is some substance to the bill but none of it is the “closing loopholes” stuff the press is mentioning. Shhh, don’t tell them. But the bill “clarifies” that submitting medical records to the NICS does not violate HIPAA. So, we’ll have a crazy person database, I guess?
Other things that got my attention:
It asks states to do their jobs and report data. Ok, good.
Dealers may voluntarily run checks and snoop on people who don’t buy guns err perform a check on employees. I don’t inherently oppose this but I can see it being abused.
Looks to also expand peaceable journey laws but I bet NY still doesn’t comply with the law there.
Importantly, it looks to pave the way for internet sales. It allows them and will allow dealers to do out of state checks.
So far, I’m a fan. But we’ll see.
There’s gun control to be had if it weren’t for all you people, you know, letting your reps know what you think.
A journalism award noted the following:
Reporter Brad Heath discovered dozens of men locked up on gun possession charges even though a federal appeals court had concluded they had done no federal crime. Using tips from lawyers, inmates and families, and sifting through thousands of pages of court documents, Heath showed the Justice Department knew the prisoners were innocent of the charges, but made no effort to identify or alert people whose convictions should have been invalidated. Many of the prisoners didn’t realize they were innocent until USA TODAY contacted them. He also found prosecutors were persuading courts to keep sex offenders in prison past the expiration of their sentences based on questionable psychological assessments. Heath’s dogged reporting exposed shortcomings in the criminal justice system and resulted in the release of at least 32 federal prisoners and the end of supervised release for 12 others. IRE commends Heath for digging for the truth to correct an unbelievable breakdown in the justice system.
Here’s a link to the story which does not contain much info. Anyone got more?
unthinking progressives: Senator To Newtown Families: The Gun Debate Has Nothing To Do With You
What he actually said was:
See, I think it’s so unfair of the administration to hurt these families, to make them think this has something to do with them when, in fact, it doesn’t
Well, not a single proposed gun control would have stopped the Newtown shooting. Not one.
In NY after the SAFE act, a man claims his gun permit was yanked because he was on anti-anxiety medication. How did the state police know? The article does not say.
14 hurt in a mass stabbing in Texas. Good thing firearms are banned there!
We must clearly have a national conversation about knife control. And register knives. And background checks for kitchen implements. For the children
Most people don’t approve of his gun control nonsense.
And gun control is not about politics unless you disagree with him. Like most people, apparently.
Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
