No, the disarmed chose to only watch. More liberal (in the traditional, small “l” meaning of the word liberal) gun laws would have meant a witness may have been armed, but that witness still would have had to choose to intervene. In addition to the bladed weapons used to commit the murder, one of the murderers had a gun. Would the same people who decided that it wasn’t worth stepping in unarmed to try to save a man being murdered in front of them have chosen to try to draw a gun when one of the people who they wanted to stop already had one in his hand? For that matter, would people who stand timidly by while a murder is committed in front of them even be willing to avail themselves of the right to bear arms were it offered to them? Perhaps, perhaps not.
I agree that we’re better off when the government doesn’t trample on our right to defend ourselves. That said, we shouldn’t mistake the tools to effectively defend ourselves with the will to employ those tools.
Britian has descended into barbarism where criminals attack, rob, maim and kill with relative impunity while their government makes sure their victims are unarmed and then follows up the criminal attack against anyone who dares successfully weild a weapon in self-defense.

Oh, lets not forget that it took almost 20 minutes for police to arrive.
