I don’t trust most Republicans with gun rights (or, for that matter, much else), so, when I see the inevitable descriptions of pro-gun Democrats, I believe it when I see it.
Manchin marketed himself as a conservative, gun-friendly Democrat, the same way that I heard Toomey was a conservative for years before he ran for Senate.
But Manchin and Toomey have both proved to be a bill of goods.
Nor did I like it a bit when the NRA played nice with Harry Reid in his 2010 election by declining to endorse his pro-gun opponent, even though Reid had played an important role in securing Senate confirmation of Obama’s 2 anti-gun SCOTUS justices.
For years I had heard and read that Reid was a pro-gun Democrat.
Since the Newtown shooting, Reid has proved himself to be no friend of 2A supporters, nor is he going away in his assault on gun rights anytime soon.
My only hope of defeating the next round of anti-2A legislation (the background check legislation that Manchin continues to push) is that the House majority adopts the Hastert Rule, pursuant to which the Speaker will only bring legislation to the floor that a majority of House Republicans supports.
