Is gray the new black?
No! Operatingest operators operating in operations operationally prefer black. I read it on the internet.

Dark Gray is better than black, it doesn’t show up as much.

Not “operationally prefer black”, but “operationally prefer obsidian”?

I’ve long preferred gray to both black and white in most situations. Among other things, it isn’t as obvious that a gray-colored item is slightly dirty or faded than it is with a black or white item.

I’m going with the practice of Terry Pratchett’s beloved Tyrant of Ankh-Morpork, the largest city of Discworld.
Lord Vetinari, in his Assassin’s Guild student days, was the only person to read a very learned dissertation on camouflage before a fellow student burned the book. He learned, and tested successfully, the theory that mottled dark green hid one in shadows or darkness better than solid black.

Actually, Vetinari would wear green, brown, or gray. Personally, I wore gray tacpants back when the manufacturer’s tag still read “Royal Robbins”, so I hereby anoint myself a trendsetter.

I stand corrected on the total color range of the Tyrant Vetinari’s wardrobe but my memory tells me I am right about his original trial of dark mottled green as camouflage.
I don’t recall which Discworld book (of the many Pratchett wrote) my memory comes from, and while I’d rather go through the bookshelf all day there are chores to finish.

As to trendsetting, I unfortunately started buying my own clothes when preppy was in, and to this day tan chinos are as tactical as I can get.
Still, that works for desert warfare, so I have that going for me.
