Because that’s what they need

Its only going to get worse. the LESO program is a way for police department to get ahold of gear with the promise of utilizing it for a period of time. then after that, they are free to sell them. It also depends on the equipment ie these vehicles fall under the same rules as humvee’s do. that the state or federal gov can recall when needed. and, with that being said, there are at least 20 at ft Campbell that are listed for LESO use….

Having spent a lot of time behind the wheel of that truck, all I can say is that they’re going to quickly realize that a MaxxPro is probably the least useful MRAP for their needs.

My po-dunk town of 1200 just got 2 Humvees, and added 5 more full auto m4s to its armory. The now have more automatics then officers (5). This is the town that let an idiot who said he was from the DEA run warrentless searches of homes and run roughshod over the community. But hey, they were free/ cheap, we ‘need’ them for policing rural Missouri.

The fact that New Hampshire residents staged a major protest against such nonsense makes me think that is the place to retire. TN and TX seem to be too pro-big-cop for my taste.

I don’t get the flipout over MRAPS. It’s a Brinks truck with a lift kit, not a main battle tank, and we already paid for the damn things, so they may as well see some use instead of getting scrapped.

We should be lobbying to have the things auctioned off so that future Iraq War reenactors won’t have to make fake ones out of plywood.

Seeing an armor-skirted* police APC in Belfast simply reminded me of the history of the area, and the fact that I was only a scant mile or so from this mural.

Seeing an MRAP in Gallatin would remind me that I am not, in fact, in an area plagued by guerrilla and insurgent warfare, and that if the police feel as though it is, it is time for me to be elsewhere.

  7. Linoge Says:

    Derp.

    * – Those skirts made such pretty sparks when they hit speed bumps… `

Grants give you the toys but you need to cover the care and feeding of that beast. It will be a bit more money per year to operate even part time than a Crown Vic or Suburban.

Secondly a MRAP doesn’t drive like the Crown Vic either.
I give it 50/50 it ends up on it’s side in a ditch.

  9. mikee Says:

Take a slightly longer term look at this situation.

These milspec vehicles are going to go up for public auction eventually, just like all those Ford Crown Vics with the suspension package, oil coolers and gate openers sold when they hit 80,000 miles for $3000.

I will be watching for surplus sales or auction notices on well-maintained but little used armored personnel carriers by cities and counties. Who knows, I might have the high bid at auction!

This is the inverse of not learning history and being doomed to repeat it. If we learn the WRONG lessons from history, we are doomed to keep repeating those mistakes.

The North Hollywood shootout allowed law enforcement to claim they were undergunned and that bad guys should not be allowed body armor. Of course, we can argue. But no handgun and combo is going to pierce Level III armor. So, every police department had to lose shotguns, purchase rifles, and buy Level III body armor. Wrong. They were driving 2000 lb weapons. Body armor is not magical. Unload your 9mm handgun on a guy in body armor and I beat he will have trouble breathing.

They are giving the police expensive tools that will require a lot of support and will have no use.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
