Cut Shells

    That was cool!

  2. Cowboy Says:

The old man in Cormac McCarthy’s “The Orchard Keeper” makes repeated use of cut shells. I’d never heard of it before reading that.

  3. ankle Says:

Lost art? We shoot these all the time. They rock.

  4. nk Says:

Aw fer …. I grew up with guys who reloaded shotshells. Some used blackpowder, some used smokeless. You can stuff anything in there. How about three .36 balls with the tit from the mold still on?

  5. D2k Says:

Be careful with cut shells, the wider projectile can cause pressure spikes.
Wax slugs are better as they are just the pellets held together with wax inside the wadding.

  6. Dave Says:

All well and good for playing, but I sure wouldn’t use altered ammo for self-defense. Lawyers would have a field day.

  7. Lazy Bike Commuter Says:

I wouldn’t use it for self defense UNLESS there was nothing else available.

Those guys have a whole lot of good videos, I’ve been following for a couple years.

The video is about two an a half years old and probably kicked off the whole “cut shell” / “waxer” / modified shotgun shell. I’ve read about cut shells before, just never seen ’em done before.

Google’s video search sucks, but I can’t find an older video myself.

Anyway, it’s as old as dirt and was historically used during the Great Depression to convert a birdshot load into a slug. This allowed someone to poach a deer during duck season without having to worry about getting caught beforehand with a pumpkin ball load by the game warden.

  9. treefroggy Says:

Would these even extract from a pump or auto-loader ?

  10. nk Says:

No. Nor feed, either. Don’t even think of using them in a pump or autoloader.

  11. Phelps Says:

I was just thinking that these would have to be fed individually into a pump gun, but I don’t see why there would be a problem with extraction. An autoloader is obviously out.

  12. Paul Says:

I bet in a good coach gun, if the barrels are regulated right, it would make a devastating SD load. Sort of like a 12 gauge ‘Glaser’ safety slug!

Lawyers? Well at least here in Texas, if it’s a good shoot, I doubt it will matter.

Just look at it as a extension of VP Biden’s advice on shotguns. In fact, I’d write a letter to Biden telling him about this shell and how it’s needed for double barrels. Who knows, he might even mention it at the next leftist DNC meeting.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
