we are winning this particular culture war – and that they are not helping
But tarring and feathering may be too much. And, if I saw someone walking into the local grocer with an AR-15 in hand, I’d leave quickly.

Believe it or not there once was a day that carrying a long gun or pistol into an establishment wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow. Over a very long time the panty waisted types and control freaks have nibbled away at that normal attitude and demonized guns. It would be nice if we could work our way back to the majority realizing the control freaks and the cowards want to always take from the rest of us. Our guns, our freedom, everything of ours that they don’t approve of. Maybe the way some approach it isn’t really the way to “desensitize” people, I don’t know. I do know if some attempt isn’t made then guns will always be demonized, in some way, shape or form.

It’s silly, and it’s kinda being a douche.

I understand RC’s remarks above, and he’s right – once upon a time in America hauling a long gun everywhere you went wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. But, that was quite some time ago, and the culture has since changed. Can we – should we – change it back?
There’s more than a little bit of difference between an 1894 slung over one’s shoulder in Billy Bob’s Bait Shoppe and General Store in rural anyplace, and an AR-15 in something like a Starbucks. Starbucks, et al, by definition will be found in urban areas because that’s where the money flows are for their product. And, so, far, slung ARs aren’t like 1894s – even an 1894 in a Starbucks would be out of the norm.
Culture change occurs slowly, and in case you haven’t noticed, rarely can be forced by those insisting on it. The culture has to change itself, and that means thousands or millions of individuals accepting a new component of the culture.
Does that mean we introduce non-gunnies to slung rifles slowly, starting with bolt rifles, then a lever, then a semi? Well, no. What we’re after is normalization, and it’s abnormal to casually encounter slung rifles of any type in urban or suburban areas. Visible handguns occasionally, maybe not so much.
Altering perceptions – our goal, because that’s how culture change begins – requires patience and some degree of subtlety. An AR-15 printed on a T-shirt is a conversation starter and an opportunity to gently present our case. The actual AR-15 tends to shut down discussion.
Which is more important to us?

Wait until the islamo-fascist hit a few of our soft targets like malls or schools. Then we’ll be carting guns around like the Israelis or swiss. In some states.

The only way to fix things to to re-normalize open carry.

There’s no point in arguing with a man fool enough to get his kicks carrying his rifle into a coffee shop.
Might as well yell at the trees for dropping leaves on your lawn.

Between what happened in the DC Navy Yard and what happened in Kenya recently, maybe everyone should carry a long gun everywhere. There’s a bloodbath coming, better be prepared, if you want to survive.

Oh, no, you’re a jerk for wanting to carry a gun places where people phear guns.
Better to Die in Place than be you know a jerk.

Hmmm…wasn’t that long ago you could walk into a Western Auto and buy a rifle or handgun along with your hardware (tools and building type) needs. Perhaps not in the densely urban centers but in most of the country kids took their rifles to school because they were hunting before or going after school. It was the ’60’s and ’70’s that this nonsense really spiralled out of control…not really that long ago, and the culture and attitudes were forced to change by a minority of people. I’m not advocating freaking people out but most people don’t have a sense of the scale and scope of history and don’t realize how society was bent to the will of a small minority, while the large majority were paying attention to everyday life and in a very short, very recent past.

Maybe so, but it will be done to the background chorus of The Usual Suspects with The Usual Laundry List of Evil Features and Non-Pertinent Restrictions demanding even more gun control while the Usual Hand Wringers and Pearl Clutchers dance in the blood. The difference is that far fewer would listen to them.
