Given how GZ was portrayed (zealous cop wannabe)because he was a block watch organizer, I would say that anybody considering joining ANY officially sanctioned block watch program is a damn fool.
I’ll keep in on the down low thank you.

That’s why you don’t organize a “neighborhood watch”. Instead, just be a “concerned citizen that networks with other concerned citizens”.

Neighborhood Watch? Nothing says “easy pickings” to a burglar like a good old rusty neighborhood watch sign.
Concerned citizen? Somewhat better, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors mowing the front lawn and watch passers by.
What is the most effective system of neighborhood protection? I’ll tell ya, because I experienced it…
What you want in your neighborhood are some Little Old Ladies. The kind that sit on their front porches sipping tea with each other in the afternoons. They are nosier than you’d believe possible, and notice everything.
In my neighborhood in a suburb of Baltimore, one L.O.L. used a S&W “Lemon Squeezer” revolver to get a burglar out of her house, pronto. The police who took the report noted that the ammo was sorta green, having been in the gun since 1957 when her hubby died. They went out and bought her a fresh box.

It’s the capitalized Neighborhood Watch sponsored by the cops to do their job for them while they’re digesting their donuts. Nothing to prevent private citizens watching their neighborhood armed as Tango suggested above.

I fail to see why the Sanford local government needs to get involved, as I recall, the HOA settled with Trayvon’s parents upwards of $1 million for wrongful death.
If I was on a HOA board, that’s enough reason right there to end any association with any kind of neighborhood watch at any time in the future.

I agree with Steve.
With the way Zimmerman* was pilloried as a wannabe out looking for trouble (he wasn’t “patrolling” but heading to the store) for being part of the Watch, I’d never join one. No chance. Sure, if I saw something hinky I’d call the cops, but I want nothing to do with any kind of organized group for that.
If anybody ever wonders why nobody does anything to care for their neighborhoods anymore, they can thank the kind of hoopla they ginned up whenever somebody did go out of their way. Nope, not gonna do it.
*Whether Zimmerman performed brilliantly or stupidly is beside the point here. I’m just saying that the narrative that will be spun will use that kind of thing to nail you to the wall.

I’m my own, unannounced “neighborhood watch” beginning at my own front door and extending wherever I happen to walk or drive. Piss on the need for advertising what you claim to be or who you think you are; Be that a cop wannabe or just John Q. Citizen. Simply stay calm and carry on, mind your biz, stay alert, be polite and live your life.
Let the crybabies and neighborhood busy bodies fend for themselves.

Have a carry permit so not “allowed” to participate in your Neighborhood Watch?
Okay, then. Just go walking on your own. And let the Neighborhood Watch watch you.
Though I think this might have the potential for reversing the outcome one might expect following the Trayvon attack on Zimmerman.
Just sayin . . .
